Daring Fashion Highlights from the 2025 MTV VMAs
The MTV Video Music Awards have always been known as a stage not just for music but for bold, sometimes shocking, and always memorable fashion. This year’s red carpet at New York’s UBS Arena was no exception, with artists turning the spotlight into a runway of creativity, tributes, and even a few surprises that left fans buzzing.
FKA Twigs brought one of the most avant-garde looks of the evening, and her hairstyle alone stole attention. Her braids were styled into the shape of headphones, blending hair artistry with sculpture. Even the smallest details were considered — from cornrows and spikes to braids resembling dangling jack cables. Paired with a bandeau top and low-rise pants, the look was equal parts edgy and conceptual.
Sabrina Carpenter offered a completely different vibe. Known for strapless gowns and playful silhouettes, she surprised everyone with a high-necked, long-sleeved Valentino gown that nearly blended into the red carpet. The sheer red fabric, decorated with beadwork and floral embroidery, revealed just enough to keep things fun. She carried a lilac boa for extra flair, fitting for a night when she walked away with three awards, including Best Pop Artist.

The crossover between pop culture and film was highlighted when Huntr/x — the fictional girl group from Netflix’s record-breaking movie “KPop Demon Hunters” — came to life through the voices behind the characters. Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, and Ejae hit the carpet in looks inspired by their animated alter egos, with Nuna’s puffy jacket resembling a sleeping bag sparking social media excitement.
Yungblud’s appearance was both fashionable and emotional. His dark, gothic styling included leather pants and boots, but the centerpiece was a jeweled cross necklace gifted to him by Ozzy Osbourne before the rock legend’s passing in July. Removing his jacket on the carpet, he made the necklace the star of his tribute, ahead of performing with rock icons in Osbourne’s honor.
Tate McRae leaned fully into the sheer trend with a flowing silk chiffon gown by Ludovic de Saint Sernin. The intricate handmade dress, with pleated bra and visible lingerie-inspired detailing, earned her comparisons to a Greek goddess. Meanwhile, Doja Cat blended fashion and performance art. Dressed in an ’80s-inspired Balmain gown with a blonde wig, she shocked everyone by pulling out a lipstick-shaped clutch, applying lipstick, and then biting into it — only for it to be revealed as a chocolate prop. The stunt doubled as her announcement as the new face of MAC Cosmetics.
Archival fashion also had its moment. Tyla reimagined a Chanel piece once worn by Claudia Schiffer in the early ’90s, transforming a sleeveless shirt into a form-fitting minidress. Conan Gray, on the other hand, went maximalist in a denim-heavy sailor-inspired outfit that reportedly weighed 30 pounds, proving his commitment to theatrical red carpet style.
Finally, girl group Katseye delivered a masterclass in coordinated fashion. Outfits in black satin and sparkle showcased individuality while keeping a cohesive group aesthetic. From jewel-studded headpieces to bold conical bras, each member balanced personality with harmony.
Altogether, the 2025 VMAs red carpet was a parade of risk-taking, tributes, and playful glamour — perfectly in line with the show’s history of making fashion as unforgettable as the music itself.
