Devastating Floods Sweep Through Bali, Leaving Dozens Dead and Homes Inundated
Heavy rains have swept across Bali over the past two days, causing widespread flooding and tragic loss of life. At least 14 people have died, and several others are still missing as rescuers continue to search low-lying areas. The floods have forced hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes, and entire neighborhoods have been left underwater.
In the island’s capital, Denpasar, five people were reported dead after flash floods tore through residential areas. Four more fatalities were confirmed in surrounding regions, including Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung. Locals have described the rain as unprecedented, saying many had never seen anything like it before. Streets were quickly transformed into rivers, and homes were submerged as water levels rose dramatically.

Nearly 200 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters set up in schools and mosques, while emergency crews worked tirelessly to reach those trapped by the floodwaters. Video footage released by the Denpasar search and rescue agency showed rescuers navigating chest-deep water in rubber boats, attempting to bring people to safety. Tragically, some lives were lost when buildings collapsed under the force of the flood. In one instance, four people were killed when a structure at the Kumbasari market in Denpasar was swept away.
Beyond Bali, neighboring provinces such as East Nusa Tenggara were also hit hard. Rescuers recovered the bodies of a mother and her child buried under mud in the village of Mauponggo, along with another victim in the nearby village of Loka Laba. In West Denpasar, additional deaths occurred when buildings gave way under the relentless rainfall.
The damage left in the flood’s wake was shocking. As waters began to recede, residents returned to streets covered in mud and debris. Cars were overturned, personal belongings washed away, and sidewalks were littered with everyday items like sandals, pots, and photographs. Authorities immediately began clearing the mud, restoring electricity, and removing piles of wet garbage to help communities start recovering.
Access to Denpasar’s international airport was temporarily limited, with trucks being the only vehicles able to reach the terminals. Around 200 rescue personnel remained in affected areas, continuing to monitor river levels and provide aid. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his condolences and directed the national disaster agency to take charge of emergency response efforts, ensuring that the basic needs of displaced residents are met.
For many locals, the experience has been terrifying. One resident recounted being completely isolated in her flooded home, admitting that if she had been asleep when the water rose, she might not have survived. Authorities warn that several people are still unaccounted for, and the full impact of this rare and severe weather event is still being assessed.
