Ed Sheeran Moves to US, Will Miss Ipswich Town Matches
Ed Sheeran has shared some news that has left many of his fans in Suffolk both proud and a little sad. The singer, who has been one of the most recognizable faces supporting Ipswich Town in recent years, revealed that he will no longer be able to attend matches regularly because he is moving to the United States with his family.
This announcement came during his appearance on The 2 Johnnies Podcast , where he explained that life on tour and his growing family mean he can’t keep flying back and forth anymore. Last season, Sheeran managed to attend nearly every Ipswich Town game, often spotted cheering from the stands at Portman Road. But this year, he admitted he could only make it to one match before the move.

Sheeran, who is now 34, has built a strong connection with both the county of Suffolk and the Tractor Boys. Not only is he a familiar face at games, but he also owns a small stake in the club—around 1.4 percent. Beyond football, his ties to the area are deep: he grew up near Framlingham, still owns a large estate there, and even hosted three massive homecoming shows at Portman Road earlier this year. His Suffolk property, famously nicknamed “Sheeranville,” includes pubs and a chapel, and it will remain in his possession despite the family’s relocation.
On the podcast, Sheeran reflected on his decision, saying that moving abroad felt necessary because of his long tour in America. He mentioned having dreamed of spending time in Nashville, with thoughts of exploring country music more seriously. But above all, it came down to family. In his words, “I can’t just dip in and out—we’re going and settling there.”
Fans of Ipswich Town have been quick to react. Supporters’ groups praised him as a loyal follower of the club and as someone who has given back to the community. One group, Ipswich Town Fans Supporting Foodbanks, highlighted how Sheeran has always seen himself as just one fan among many, never putting himself above others despite his fame. They added that even if he’s far from Portman Road, his support would still be felt.
Meanwhile, Sheeran’s career continues at full pace. His new album Play is being released this Friday, coinciding with Ipswich Town’s match against Sheffield United. Soon after, he will take the stage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in the United States on September 20.
So while Ipswich Town fans may miss seeing Sheeran in the stands, there’s little doubt he’ll continue to carry Suffolk pride with him across the Atlantic. And for Ed himself, this move marks a new chapter—balancing his role as a global superstar with his life as a husband, father, and still, very much, a devoted Tractor Boy at heart.
