Giants Elevate Rookie Jaxson Dart to Backup QB Role
The buzz around the New York Giants right now is all about rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, and for good reason. After an eye-catching preseason, the Giants have officially listed him as the backup to veteran Russell Wilson on their first unofficial depth chart of the regular season. That’s a huge leap for a first-year player, and it’s sending a message across the league.
Dart didn’t just slide into this role quietly—he earned it with sharp, consistent play during the exhibition games. In three appearances, he completed 68 percent of his passes, throwing for 372 yards with three touchdowns and, maybe most importantly, no interceptions. It wasn’t just about the stats either. The way he commanded the offense stood out. He looked comfortable in the pocket, made quick decisions, delivered on-time throws, and even showed off his ability to scramble when needed. That blend of skills really caught the eye of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.

What makes this move interesting is how it reshapes the quarterback room. Veteran Jameis Winston, who at one point was expected to be Wilson’s primary backup, has now been bumped down to the third spot. The safe and predictable approach might have been to keep Winston at QB2 while giving Dart more time to develop slowly. Instead, the Giants’ updated chart shows that the rookie has impressed enough to be trusted right away.
Coach Daboll even tested him in unusual ways during the preseason—turning off his headset mid-game or throwing him into unexpected scenarios—to see how Dart would respond. And each time, he passed the test. Schoen added last week that what stood out most was how quickly Dart was able to pick things up, execute, and play fast, something that’s rarely seen from rookie quarterbacks so early.
Of course, the big question everyone’s asking now is: when will we actually see Dart in regular-season action? With Wilson as the clear starter, the plan is still to let Dart develop, but having him as QB2 means he’s only one play away from being on the field. It could happen sooner than expected, and the Giants’ decision shows confidence that if the moment comes, Dart will be ready.
So as the Giants head into Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, all eyes will be not just on Wilson, but also on the depth chart behind him. Because while the season is young, Jaxson Dart’s rise from promising rookie to the team’s No. 2 quarterback has already made one thing clear: he’s not just a name to remember for the future—he’s part of the conversation right now.
