Haaland Shines as Man City Crush United in Derby

The Manchester derby was played out with all its usual noise and tension, but by the end, there was no doubt who owned the night. Manchester City swept aside their local rivals Manchester United with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Etihad, a result that not only restored their momentum but also reminded everyone of their firepower.

The stage was set in sombre fashion, with a tribute to Ricky Hatton, but once the whistle went, the football itself took over. City, who had been under pressure after back-to-back defeats, needed a response, and their talisman Erling Haaland delivered in ruthless style. He had urged his teammates to, in his words, “get our asses going,” and then he personally showed the way by scoring twice in the second half, after Phil Foden had broken the deadlock with a header in the 18th minute.

Foden’s opener was a beauty. Rodri controlled the midfield, Jérémy Doku burst down the right, and his floated cross found Foden, who rose above the defence to guide his header past United’s keeper Altay Bayindir. That early blow put United on the back foot, though for a spell they tried to fight their way back into the game. Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo had chances, but both failed to take them.

The longer the game went, the more City tightened their grip. Haaland’s first goal, arriving in the 68th minute, was the moment the contest was effectively ended. Bernardo Silva slid a clever pass through, Haaland ran onto it, paused calmly, and struck with precision. The net rippled, and United’s hopes collapsed. Soon after, he struck again with another finish that showed his killer instinct, sealing the win and sparking celebrations in the stands.

United, meanwhile, looked out of answers. Manager Ruben Amorim shuffled his side with changes, even introducing Harry Maguire and youngster Kobbie Mainoo late on, but the problems remained clear. The team lacked creativity, drive, and belief. Twelve years on from Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, the question of when United will truly recover feels as pressing as ever.

City, on the other hand, could have run up an even bigger scoreline. Haaland missed a sitter when faced with an open net, and Tijjani Reijnders skewed wide from a promising position. Still, the performance was more than enough to lift Pep Guardiola’s side back on track, giving them six points from four matches.

United were left stuck on four points, their season already looking shaky, and their coach visibly frustrated on the touchline. Watching co-owner Jim Ratcliffe wore a grim expression as his side trudged off.

So, on this derby day, the blue half of Manchester walked away triumphant, with Haaland once again the difference-maker. For City, it was a return to business. For United, it was yet another painful reminder of how far they still have to go.
