HBO’s “Task” Puts Philly in the Spotlight

HBO has rolled out a new crime drama called Task , and it’s quickly putting Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs right back into the national spotlight. The series was created by Brad Ingelsby, who audiences may remember as the writer and producer behind Mare of Easttown . Much like that earlier success, this show digs deep into local flavor — not just in story, but also in setting, dialect, and atmosphere.

The premise of Task centers on an FBI agent based in Philadelphia who is tasked with dismantling a series of violent robberies targeting drug houses across the Delaware Valley. At the heart of the drama is Tom Brandis, played by Emmy Award winner Mark Ruffalo. Brandis isn’t your typical federal agent — before joining the FBI, he was a priest, and his personal life has been marked by tragedy after the loss of his wife. That complicated past fuels much of his intensity as he leads a task force through the dangerous underworld of the region.

On the other side of the conflict is Robbie Prendergrast, a sanitation worker turned criminal, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey. Viewers might recognize Pelphrey from Ozark and Guiding Light . In Task , he becomes the face of desperation and danger, staging robberies across Philadelphia’s drug scene. Emilia Jones steps in as Maeve, Robbie’s niece, who gets tangled up in his choices. Both actors are said to deliver impressively accurate Delco accents, which adds to the authenticity that Philadelphia audiences, in particular, will notice.

Filming for the show stayed true to its roots. Delaware and Chester counties serve as the backdrop, with recognizable spots sprinkled throughout the episodes. Marcus Hook, Media, Ridley, South Philly, and Mont Clare were all turned into filming locations. Real local businesses were woven into the series too — from Rita’s Italian Ice to roast pork sandwiches topped with horseradish. In one scene, Ruffalo’s character is spotted devouring a hoagie from A Cut Above Deli in Newtown Square. Another episode features a stop at Barnaby’s, a bar that longtime locals will recognize, even though it has since been rebranded as the Ridley House. South Philly’s famous Ralph’s Italian Restaurant and the city’s old police headquarters, known as the Roundhouse, also make appearances, grounding the story even further in the region.

The show doesn’t just showcase scenery — it captures the cultural texture of the area. From accents to food and neighborhood hangouts, Task embraces the gritty realism that made Mare of Easttown

For those following along, new episodes air every Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO and are also available for streaming on HBO Max. With its mix of big-name talent, emotionally charged storytelling, and unmistakable Philly character, Task is shaping up to be a series that keeps viewers glued to the screen — while giving Philadelphia yet another starring role on television.
