Highway 401 Shut Down After Tanker Crash Near Avenue Road

Late Friday night, Highway 401 in Toronto turned into a scene of chaos after a serious crash involving multiple vehicles and a tanker truck. Both the eastbound and westbound express lanes near Avenue Road were forced to close, leaving drivers stranded and emergency crews scrambling to respond.

According to provincial police, the crash happened in the westbound lanes just after 11 p.m. The exact number of vehicles involved hasn’t been confirmed, and details about the causes remain unclear. But what was immediately obvious was the severity of the situation. Photos taken at the scene show the tanker truck lying on its side, blocking a wide stretch of the highway. Its cab was badly damaged, and what looked like liquid from its load had spilled across the pavement, creating a hazardous mess.

The force of the crash was so strong that a concrete barrier separating the express lanes was broken apart. Large chunks of concrete were scattered onto the eastbound lanes, adding another layer of danger and making the closure of both directions unavoidable. Drivers heading through that stretch of Highway 401, one of the busiest highways in North America, suddenly found themselves caught in an unexpected overnight shutdown.

Paramedics quickly arrived at the scene. They confirmed that one man had been taken to a trauma centre with serious injuries, although thankfully those injuries were not considered life-threatening. Crews continued to assess others who may have been affected, while police and firefighters worked to secure the area.

The closure caused major disruptions, as vehicles backed up for kilometres in both directions. Just after midnight, officials managed to reopen one lane on the eastbound side to let some traffic through, but cleanup and repairs were expected to last well into the night and possibly into the next day.

For now, many questions remain unanswered. How many vehicles were directly involved? What caused the tanker to roll over? And how long will it take before the express lanes are fully safe to reopen? Investigators are still piecing together the chain of events.

What is clear is that Friday night’s crash highlighted just how quickly a routine drive on Highway 401 can turn into a dangerous and chaotic situation. With a tanker truck overturned, debris scattered across lanes, and traffic forced to a standstill, the incident will be remembered as yet another reminder of the risks that come with high-speed travel on one of Canada’s busiest roadways.
