Ipswich Town Hit by Injury Concerns Ahead of Sheffield Clash
Ipswich Town fans are keeping a close eye on the injury situation as manager Kieran McKenna provided a detailed update before the team’s upcoming match against Sheffield United. The biggest concern surrounds attacker Sammie Szmodics, who picked up a knock while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.
Szmodics featured for 78 minutes in Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Hungary during the break, but he was forced to withdraw from the squad shortly after. He later posted on social media, expressing his frustration at having to leave camp early and missing the following game against Armenia. McKenna explained that the issue came from swelling in the ankle that Szmodics had surgery on during the summer. Because of that, his involvement with Ireland was ruled out completely.

Now, the club faces a race against time to see whether he will be fit for Friday night’s clash. Szmodics has yet to return to full training with the squad, but he has begun work with rehabilitation staff. McKenna admitted that although it is not impossible for the forward to feature, the final decision will depend on how his recovery progresses in the coming hours.
On a more positive note, Ipswich could finally see summer signing Marcelino Núñez make his debut. The midfielder, who joined from Norwich City in a £7.5 million move, had been sidelined with an ankle problem since arriving in Suffolk. McKenna confirmed that Núñez has trained fully with the squad since Monday and is now ready to be involved. He described the Chilean international as a player of real quality and believes his experience and skill will add a new dimension to the team.
The update didn’t stop there. Both Harry Clarke and Cameron Humphreys, who had been absent with knee ligament and calf injuries respectively, are now back in full training. McKenna highlighted how important it was to have them available again, pointing out that the squad is in a strong position overall heading into this next run of fixtures.
The overall mood in the camp appears positive. Despite the uncertainty over Szmodics, McKenna praised the spirit within the group and noted that the return of several players has lifted the squad ahead of what promises to be a challenging game against Sheffield United.
So, while Ipswich supporters may have to wait until matchday to see whether Szmodics will be fit to play, there is plenty of encouragement with the return of Núñez, Clarke, and Humphreys. The squad looks stronger, and the manager’s confidence suggests Ipswich are approaching the game with good momentum, even if a key forward remains a doubt.
