Kevin Bacon Balances Music, Movies, and Giving Back
Kevin Bacon has been a familiar face on screen for over four decades, but what makes him fascinating is that acting, the craft that made him a household name, wasn’t his first love. Long before his breakout role in Footloose , music had already found its way into his heart. As a teenager in Philadelphia, he spent hours drumming in the basement and eventually joined a band called—ironically—Footloose. It felt almost prophetic that years later, he would embody the rebellious dancer in the iconic 1984 film.
But music never left his side. His older brother, Michael, encouraged him to keep at it, eventually pulling him into their family project, The Bacon Brothers . Kevin admitted he was terrified at first—he’d never played guitar and the thought of standing on stage, singing his own songs, had his knees literally knocking. But what started as a nerve-wracking experiment has now lasted three decades, with the brothers releasing albums and touring together, proving that music wasn’t just a hobby but a lifelong passion.

What makes Bacon’s story compelling is how naturally philanthropy became woven into it. In the mid-90s, a lighthearted party game— Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon —spread across college campuses, poking fun at his vast filmography and endless co-star connections. At first, he hated it, feeling like it was a joke at his expense. But in time, he realized it was something he could reclaim and put to good use. In 2007, he launched SixDegrees.org , a nonprofit designed to link grassroots charities with resources and funding. Most recently, the foundation opened Ruth’s Room, named after his late mother, inside a Philadelphia juvenile justice center. There, kids can learn, create music, and find safe expression—an extension of the empathy and compassion that Bacon credits as essential not only to acting but also to life.
On a personal level, Bacon shares that fatherhood shifted his perspective. Before having children, his ambitions were inwardly focused: the next role, the next paycheck, the next opportunity. But raising a family opened his eyes to the wider world, and the causes that needed attention—climate change, injustice, hunger, animals. Giving back, he says, became less of a choice and more of a responsibility.
Even now, joy and music remain a constant thread in his life. He’s often spotted on Instagram singing to his goats or sharing new tracks with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, and their kids. Music also helps him build his characters—he curates playlists for roles, using songs to slip into a character’s headspace.
And when he reflects on it all—music, acting, activism—Bacon insists that finding joy itself is a radical act. In a world full of despair and chaos, he believes that peace and happiness are almost rebellious. If you can hold onto them, he says, it’s like giving despair a big “no thanks.”
Through every role, every song, and every cause he champions, Kevin Bacon shows that his real talent lies in connection—whether it’s to a character, an audience, or a community in need.
