Matt Damon’s Missed Marvel Moment And Other Almost-Casts
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, getting cast as a superhero can completely change an actor’s career. These roles don’t just add another line on a résumé — they cement someone’s name in Hollywood history. But what’s really fascinating is how many famous actors came close to stepping into those iconic roles and either passed on them or lost out for unexpected reasons.
Take Matt Damon, for instance. Long before the 2003 Daredevil movie was released, he was actually the first choice for the blind vigilante. Damon admitted that he had always liked the character, but he wasn’t sure about the director’s work, so he decided to step back. His friend Ben Affleck ended up taking the part instead — and later said he regretted it. Considering how poorly Daredevil was received, Damon’s decision might have been the smarter move.
And Damon wasn’t the only one. Marvel has been known to chase some big names. Joaquin Phoenix, for example, was courted several times. First, producers wanted him as Bruce Banner, then as Doctor Strange, but he walked away each time. He explained later that the projects never felt like they would be creatively fulfilling. The roles eventually went to Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Cumberbatch, who both became fan favorites.

Jason Momoa also had his shot at Marvel before he became DC’s Aquaman. He was approached to play Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy . Momoa turned it down, saying the character felt too similar to roles he’d already played. Ironically, he still ended up shirtless and swinging weapons when DC scooped him up for Aquaman.
Other near-misses are just as surprising. Rachel McAdams was Marvel’s top pick for Pepper Potts before Gwyneth Paltrow, but scheduling conflicts got in the way. Bryan Cranston was almost Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class , but he opted to star in Drive instead, which opened the door for Kevin Bacon. Even Chris Pratt almost passed on playing Star-Lord because he thought he was out of shape, until Marvel convinced him otherwise.
Some rejections came down to timing, others to personal choice. Emily Blunt actually accepted the role of Black Widow, but her existing contract for Gulliver’s Travels forced her to walk away. Scarlett Johansson stepped in and made the role her own. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise was once signed on as Iron Man, but delays with the character’s rights caused him to lose interest. That twist of fate gave Robert Downey Jr. his career-defining comeback.
Looking back, it’s wild to imagine how different the MCU could have been. The names we now immediately link with these characters weren’t always the first picks. But somehow, through timing, luck, and plenty of last-minute decisions, the right people ended up in the right suits. And maybe Matt Damon was right to hold out — even if it means fans are left wondering what his Daredevil might have looked like.
