Matthew McConaughey’s Small Bedroom Secret to a Big Marriage

Matthew McConaughey has never been shy about sharing pieces of wisdom he’s picked up along the way, but his latest bit of advice might surprise people because it’s so simple. The Academy Award–winning actor, who has been married to Camila Alves since 2012, says that one key to keeping their relationship strong is found right in their bedroom — and it’s not what most might expect. According to him, the secret is downsizing from a king-sized bed to a queen.

In his new book, Poems & Prayers , McConaughey reveals that this small change has had a big impact on his marriage. He writes in a poem, “The best thing you can do for your marriage… is get rid of that king-size mattress, and sleep in a queen-size bed.” At first, it sounds unconventional. After all, most couples dream about bigger beds and more space. But McConaughey explains that the extra distance isn’t always a good thing.

He shared a story about visiting friends who had one of those massive double king-sized beds. At first, it was great because their kids piled in to sleep with them. But eventually, the kids grew up, and what was left was a giant gap between husband and wife. McConaughey joked that he would look across the bed and feel like Camila was “a football field away.” Even when they tried to snuggle, the sheer size of the mattress made closeness feel like work. That’s when he realized — the king-sized bed wasn’t helping the marriage at all.

So, they made the switch. With a queen-sized bed, McConaughey and Alves now fall asleep shoulder-to-shoulder. He insists it makes a difference because physical closeness encourages emotional closeness, too. And there’s another upside — no room for kids to crawl in. For a couple raising three children, that boundary has helped them carve out time and space just for themselves.

Beyond the mattress, McConaughey also emphasizes that maintaining a marriage while raising a family requires deliberate effort. He admits that as parents, it’s easy to give all your attention to the kids. But he believes couples must also claim their own time together. As he puts it, one of the best lessons parents can teach their children is how to treat a partner, and that example starts with how a husband and wife treat each other.

The actor, now 55, has built a life with Alves that balances family, marriage, and even business. In 2023, the two launched their own tequila brand, leaning into their playful chemistry for the brand’s ads. But underneath the humor and fun, McConaughey continues to circle back to the same message — strong relationships are built through intention, closeness, and sometimes, just a little less space in the bed.

In Poems & Prayers , he ties these lessons to themes of love, faith, forgiveness, and family. And while some marriage advice can sound complicated, McConaughey’s might just be the simplest of all: if you want to feel closer, sleep closer.
