NFL Week 2 Shakes Up the Season with Injuries and Surprises
The second week of the NFL season has already given fans more drama than they may have expected, and the storylines are coming in fast. Injuries, upsets, and even questions about the league’s top teams are shaping the conversation.
The biggest headline came out of Cincinnati, where Joe Burrow’s season was thrown into question. Burrow, who had his team dreaming of a Super Bowl, suffered a turf toe injury in the win over Jacksonville. While turf toe doesn’t always require surgery, in this case it does, and that means Burrow will miss at least three months. For Bengals fans, this is a crushing blow. Their offense was built around Burrow’s connection with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and now the team’s hopes rest on backup Jake Browning. He has experience filling in before and played with a fearless style on Sunday, but keeping the Bengals in the playoff hunt without Burrow will be a tall order.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis might have found new life in a quarterback most people had written off. Daniel Jones, who was labeled a bust in New York, has stepped into the Colts’ starting role and looked like the player scouts once believed he could be. Against Denver, he threw for over 300 yards, tossed a touchdown, and even ran one in himself. With Jonathan Taylor dominating on the ground, the Colts suddenly look like a complete team, and Jones’ career may just have been reborn under Shane Steichen’s system.
But not everything is clicking across the league. In Kansas City, there’s reason for concern. The Chiefs, a team we’ve come to expect excellence from, are now 0-2 for the first time in over a decade. Their offense looks disjointed, missing key weapons like Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. Even Travis Kelce hasn’t been the steady force fans rely on, and Patrick Mahomes has now dropped three straight games if you include last season’s Super Bowl. Of course, nobody is ready to count Mahomes out—he and Andy Reid have a track record of figuring things out—but the early struggles are impossible to ignore.
Beyond these major storylines, other quarterback injuries are beginning to pile up around the league. Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy is expected to miss time with an ankle sprain, Washington’s Jayden Daniels has a knee issue, and New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields entered concussion protocol after exiting their game. Even San Francisco is navigating problems, with Brock Purdy sidelined and multiple offensive stars already out.
And while injuries dominated the headlines, there was still no shortage of drama on the field. The Colts edged Denver on a last-second field goal, the Cowboys and Giants battled into overtime, and Philadelphia once again outlasted Kansas City in a Super Bowl rematch.
Week 2 has made one thing clear: fortunes in the NFL can turn quickly. Dreams of championships can be stalled by injuries, overlooked players can find redemption, and even the league’s most dominant teams can look suddenly vulnerable. The season is young, but the shake-up has already begun.
