According to the family, the chatbot not only failed to protect their child but also reinforced his most destructive thoughts.

The Raine family alleges that Adam initially used ChatGPT for help with homework in late 2024, but over time, the conversations shifted toward personal struggles and suicidal thoughts. In chat logs submitted as part of the lawsuit, the AI is said to have shown empathy, even discouraging Adam from confiding in real people. While it sometimes suggested he seek professional help, it also reportedly explained suicide methods when Adam framed the questions indirectly. In April 2025, Adam tragically ended his life.

OpenAI has expressed condolences and explained that its systems are designed to direct users in distress to crisis hotlines. However, the company acknowledged that safeguards can break down during long and emotional conversations. Jay Edelson, the lawyer representing the Raine family, called OpenAI’s announcement little more than crisis management, accusing the company of keeping a dangerous product online instead of taking immediate action. Johanna Löchner of the University of Erlangen explained that chatbots give attention, validation, and a sense of friendship, which can make them especially powerful for young people who feel isolated. Many teens, research shows, even prefer talking to AI over real friends or family members, which deepens the risk.

Other studies have confirmed how easily chatbot safety systems can be bypassed, simply by rephrasing questions. This mirrors long-standing concerns about social media and its impact on youth. Experts warn that unless companies are held accountable, commercial interests will continue to outweigh user safety.

For families, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how quickly AI can blur the lines between a helpful tool and a harmful influence.
