Orcas Attack and Sink Boat off Portugal’s Coast
A dramatic and unsettling scene unfolded off the coast of Portugal when a pod of orcas launched an attack on sailing vessels, leaving tourists shaken and authorities scrambling to respond. According to reports, at least two separate boats were targeted in these encounters, one of which was ultimately sunk after the orcas rammed and damaged it.
The most recent incident happened near Fonte da Telha beach, just south of Lisbon. A group of five people was sailing when their vessel was surrounded and struck repeatedly by orcas. The Portugal National Maritime Authority confirmed that the passengers were safely rescued, and thankfully, no injuries were reported. A second attack took place farther north, near the Bay of Cascais, where another group of four people faced a similarly frightening situation. Rescue crews were able to reach them quickly, ensuring their safety as well.

What makes these events so concerning is not only the fact that they are happening with greater frequency, but also that much of the behavior is being captured on video and shared widely online. One such video, reportedly filmed by the sailing company Mercedes-Benz Oceanic Lounge, shows the dramatic moment when the orcas zeroed in on a boat, circling and striking its rudder until significant damage was inflicted.
This isn’t the first time sailors have found themselves under siege by orcas in recent years. In June 2023, during a global yacht sailing competition, a Dutch team reported a terrifying encounter with a pod that targeted their boat’s steering system. Just a few months later, in September 2023, another pod of orcas attacked a sea otter in Alaska, leaving its pup orphaned. Then, in May 2024, a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar was sunk after being rammed multiple times, with its crew forced to call for urgent rescue.
Marine experts remain puzzled by this escalating behavior. While orcas are highly intelligent and social animals, attacks on boats of this kind have been unusual in the past. Some scientists suggest the whales may be engaging in play or learning new behaviors within pods, while others speculate it could be related to stress, environmental shifts, or even retaliation after negative encounters with vessels.
Regardless of the reasons, what is clear is that these incidents are increasing in both frequency and intensity. Sailors and tourists off the Iberian coast have been urged to remain alert, and maritime authorities are monitoring the situation closely. For now, passengers who were rescued are safe, but the mystery behind why these apex predators are targeting boats remains unsolved. It is a reminder of both the power of nature and the unpredictability of the ocean, where even the most experienced sailors can find themselves at the mercy of creatures that rule the seas.
