Ottawa Basks in Warm September Sunshine

It’s the start of September in Ottawa, and the weather is giving us one more taste of summer before fall fully settles in. Instead of cool mornings and crisp evenings, the city is waking up to blue skies and daytime highs that feel more like July than September. On Friday, the temperature is expected to climb to 25 degrees Celsius, with plenty of sunshine to carry us into the weekend.

This warm streak comes as a pleasant surprise, especially with school back in session and people easing out of vacation mode. Normally, early September brings highs around 22 degrees and cooler nights dipping down to about 12. But this year, the city is running a few degrees above average. Shorts and t-shirts are still the outfit of choice, and patios, trails, and waterfront spots are buzzing with people making the most of the lingering summer warmth.

Earlier in the week, the weather was a bit more mixed. The Labour Day holiday on Monday reached a high of 26, feeling closer to 28 with the humidex, and Tuesday’s back-to-school rush even came with showers and a risk of thunderstorms. But since then, the forecast has leaned heavily toward sunshine, with mid-to-high 20s carrying through the week before easing down slightly as Friday wraps up. It’s been the kind of weather that tempts you to delay packing away the summer gear and maybe even sneak in another swim, hike, or outdoor barbecue.

The story doesn’t end with this weekend, though. Environment Canada has released its fall outlook, and it suggests that Ottawa is likely to see warmer-than-usual conditions stretching through the next couple of months. That band of warmth isn’t just confined to the capital either — much of central and eastern Ontario is expected to enjoy the same above-seasonal trend. So while the leaves may still change and the nights may cool, daytime highs could remain milder than many are used to at this time of year.

Of course, September weather in Ottawa is never entirely predictable. A sunny week can quickly be followed by a stretch of showers or a chilly snap that hints at what’s to come. But for now, the city is firmly in bonus-summer territory. Boats continue to glide across the Ottawa River, sidewalks and bike paths are full, and evenings feel comfortable enough for a stroll without bundling up.

So, as the first weekend of September arrives, it’s safe to say Ottawa is starting the month on a bright and cheerful note. Sunshine, warmth, and just a touch of late-summer nostalgia are being served up — and residents are being reminded to soak it all in, because true autumn weather will eventually make its way here.
