The U.S. Open has been delivering plenty of storylines, and New Zealand tennis fans have had more than one reason to celebrate. Erin Routliffe, alongside her Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski, has secured a place in the semifinals of the women’s doubles. It was a match that started in the worst possible way, but ended with a comeback that had the crowd buzzing.

Facing Timea Babos of Hungary and Luisa Stefani of Brazil, Routliffe and Dabrowski dropped the first set 6–0. It was a shocking beginning, where nothing seemed to click. But instead of folding under pressure, they regrouped and completely turned the match around. With steady play and smart adjustments, they managed to grind out the next two sets 6–4, 6–4. The battle lasted just over two hours and proved once again why they’re considered one of the strongest doubles teams in the game.

Now, their eyes are set on another huge challenge. In the semifinals, they will face Italy’s Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, the Olympic champions and current second seeds. It’s the kind of matchup that could go either way, but given the resilience Routliffe and Dabrowski showed, no one should be surprised if they push through to another U.S. Open final. And let’s not forget—this pair are the defending champions, having lifted the trophy in 2023. Their consistency is remarkable, reaching at least the quarterfinals in seven consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Michael Venus has also given New Zealand plenty to cheer about. Teaming up with India’s Yuki Bhambri, Venus reached the quarterfinals after an impressive win against the fourth-seeded German duo, Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz. It wasn’t an easy match by any stretch, but Venus and Bhambri handled the pressure brilliantly, winning in straight sets 6–4, 6–4 in just under an hour and a half. For Venus, this marks his second straight year making the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, which is no small feat. Next, they’ll go up against Nikola Mektic of Croatia and American Rajeev Ram, the 11th seeds, in what promises to be another tight contest.

Elsewhere in the women’s doubles, the veteran Venus Williams, who was playing with Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, saw her run come to an end. The pair had made it into the later rounds as wild cards, but were stopped by the top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova in a straightforward 6–1, 6–2 result.

All in all, New Zealand has plenty to be proud of. Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus continue to put the country on the map in doubles tennis, proving that consistency, resilience, and teamwork can take you deep into the world’s biggest tournaments. The U.S. Open story isn’t finished yet, and fans will be watching closely to see if Routliffe or Venus can go even further.
