Social Media Hype Puts Kamloops Hikers in Danger
In Kamloops this summer, a hidden gem has been getting a lot of attention online, and it’s bringing some unintended consequences. The Tranquille Slot Canyons, with their dramatic rock formations and winding riverbed, have become a trending spot on social media platforms like TikTok. Videos showing off the striking scenery make it look like the perfect summer outing. But what isn’t being shown is the very real danger that hikers face when they head down there unprepared.
Search and Rescue teams in Kamloops have already been called out twice this season to help people who couldn’t handle the intense heat and steep terrain. In one case, a hiker suffering from heat exhaustion had to be treated and escorted out of the canyon. While it might look like a short, simple walk on camera, the reality is much tougher. The trail leading down into the canyon is steep, unmaintained, and offers very little shade. Once you’re down there, the climb back out becomes physically demanding—especially when the temperature is soaring into the mid-30s Celsius.

Paula Davies, the president of Kamloops Search and Rescue, explained that the real problem is how these spots are being promoted online. Posts are painting them as fun, easy places to spend the afternoon, but they leave out the warnings about preparation and risk. Without enough water, the right footwear, or basic emergency gear, hikers can quickly get into trouble. Rescue volunteers have already noticed groups showing up at the canyon with little to no equipment—sometimes not even enough water to handle the conditions.
It’s not just about comfort, either. Heat exhaustion can hit fast, and in a rugged place like the Slot Canyons, it can turn serious. That’s why Search and Rescue is trying to get ahead of the issue by putting out strong reminders: do your research before heading out, pack more water than you think you’ll need, wear proper gear, and be prepared in case something goes wrong. A fun TikTok video might convince someone to check out the trail, but it doesn’t prepare them for the reality of the climb.
The canyon is undeniably beautiful, and it’s easy to see why people want to visit. But that beauty comes with risk, and the warning from local rescuers is clear: treat it with respect. If you’re not ready for steep climbs, blazing heat, and the possibility of an emergency, it’s better to choose a safer hike. Social media can inspire adventure, but in places like Kamloops, it’s preparation—not filters—that makes the difference between a good story and a dangerous rescue.
