Strong Storms Threaten Maryland with Rain and Wind on Saturday
So here’s what we’re looking at for today—it’s going to be an Impact Weather Day across much of Maryland, and the atmosphere is already primed for some stormy conditions. Things started out warm and muggy this morning, giving us that heavy, almost summerlike feel. But as the afternoon wears on, storms are expected to fire up, and they could pack quite a punch.
Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on the timing. By around 2 or 3 p.m., storms are likely to begin developing to the west and then sweep across the Baltimore area. The peak window for the strongest storms looks to be between about 4 and 7 p.m., which unfortunately lines up with the evening commute and a lot of outdoor events. These storms are not expected to linger all night, but while they move through, they could cause real disruptions.
The biggest threats today are lightning, brief bursts of heavy rain, and strong, potentially damaging wind gusts. In fact, some isolated storms could bring large hail. While the setup doesn’t look favorable for widespread tornadoes, meteorologists haven’t ruled out the chance of a brief, isolated spin-up if a storm cell becomes particularly intense. Areas in Northeast Maryland, especially Harford and Cecil counties, are under a slightly higher risk for severe weather. Still, all of central Maryland should be on alert.

As the front pushes through, winds will begin shifting out of the northwest, and that change will help clear things out overnight. By late evening into the early hours of Sunday, the storms should be fading, with just some lingering light rain or drizzle possible in spots. Temperatures will take a dip as well. Tonight, lows will fall into the 60s, with some cooler spots dropping even lower.
Sunday will feel completely different. Behind this system, much drier and cooler air is expected to settle in. Highs will only reach the low to mid-70s, humidity will drop noticeably, and skies will gradually clear through the day. It’s going to be the kind of refreshing, early fall weather many people have been waiting for.
Looking ahead, that cooler pattern will hold steady into much of next week. We’re talking about highs in the 70s, crisp mornings in the 50s, and plenty of sunshine—really a stretch of comfortable, pleasant weather once today’s rough patch is behind us.
For now, though, it’s important to stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening. Outdoor furniture should be secured, and any evening plans should include a backup in case storms roll through. There is also the possibility of brief power outages if winds bring down tree limbs onto power lines, so keep flashlights and chargers handy.
In short, Saturday will be stormy and unsettled, but the good news is that it won’t last long. Once the front moves through, Maryland is in for several days of beautiful, calm, and much cooler weather.
