Trump Administration Moves to Deport Garcia to Eswatini

The Trump administration has decided that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man at the center of a long and complicated immigration battle, will now be deported to the small African nation of Eswatini. This decision was revealed in an email sent to him by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, and later obtained by CNN.

Abrego Garcia, who lives in Maryland, has spent years fighting removal orders. At one point, he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, his home country, where he was held in a notorious mega prison before being brought back to the United States. Since then, he has argued that deportation to multiple countries would put him at risk of persecution or even torture. In fact, his legal team has filed claims of fear tied to more than 20 countries, something ICE officials highlighted in their communication. Despite his objections, the government is pressing ahead.

The Department of Homeland Security had originally notified him of plans to send him to Uganda, but that proposal was quickly challenged. Now, Eswatini has been chosen as the designated country of removal. An ICE spokesperson confirmed the move, stating that an immigration judge had ordered his deportation and that the agency is obligated to carry it out.

The decision comes while Abrego Garcia remains in ICE custody. He had been returned to the U.S. to face human smuggling charges, but even before his trial concludes, officials are seeking to remove him once again. A federal judge recently stepped in, ruling that he cannot be deported until at least early October. That ruling allows time for administration officials to testify in court about the handling of his case and the repeated attempts to deport him.

Abrego Garcia himself has voiced a preference to be sent to Costa Rica, where he believes he would have a chance to obtain some form of legal status. The Trump administration had previously floated that option as part of a plea deal, but he did not accept. As of now, Costa Rica remains off the table, and Eswatini is the country named in the latest removal order.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is one of Africa’s last absolute monarchies and is roughly the size of the state of New Jersey. It is one of four African countries that have agreed to take in foreign deportees under arrangements with the Trump administration, alongside Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda.

At the same time, Abrego Garcia is pursuing asylum through the Justice Department’s immigration court system. That process is still underway, leaving his legal future uncertain. What is clear for now is that the administration has set its sights on Eswatini as the next step in his long and troubled journey through the U.S. immigration system.
