West Ham Secure Igor Julio on Loan from Brighton
West Ham United have made headlines by bringing in Brazilian defender Igor Julio on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. The move comes as the transfer deadline loomed, and it’s already stirring up plenty of conversation around the Premier League.
Igor, now 27, first arrived in England back in 2023 when Brighton signed him from Fiorentina for around £14.5 million. Since then, he’s featured in 37 league games for the Seagulls, but this season he had been restricted to just a single Carabao Cup appearance. With opportunities limited at Brighton, a change of scenery seemed inevitable, and West Ham were quick to step in.

Interestingly, Crystal Palace had been very close to snapping him up earlier on deadline day. The Eagles were eyeing him as a replacement for Marc Guehi, who is being lined up by Liverpool in a big-money move. But Palace’s plan fell through once Igor chose the path to East London instead. That twist has left Guehi’s future move hanging in the balance, adding another layer of drama to the deadline-day saga.
For West Ham, though, it’s a real boost. Manager Graham Potter sounded upbeat when the deal was confirmed. He described Igor as an experienced defender with a strong pedigree, someone who already knows the demands of the Premier League. According to Potter, the Brazilian’s qualities fit well with the squad, and there’s confidence he’ll add strength and depth to the back line.
Igor’s journey to this point has been a fascinating one. Born in Bom Sucesso, Brazil, he came through the youth systems at Atlético Mineiro and Portuguesa Santista before moving to Red Bull Brasil as a teenager. By 2016, he was in Europe with Red Bull Salzburg, where he picked up valuable experience with their U19 side, even winning the UEFA Youth League. Spells in Austria and then Italy followed, with stints at SPAL and Fiorentina, where he really established himself over more than 100 appearances. He even faced West Ham in the 2023 Europa Conference League final while playing for Fiorentina.
His move to Brighton brought him into the Premier League spotlight, and although chances this season were slim, he showed his ability across 50 appearances in all competitions, including six in the Europa League. Now, at West Ham, he gets a fresh platform to prove himself again.
For the Hammers, who are aiming to balance their defensive line while pushing for strong domestic and European campaigns, Igor’s arrival could turn out to be one of the more quietly effective deals of this transfer window. Fans will be eager to see how quickly he adapts to his new surroundings and whether he can provide the kind of consistency and composure that has marked much of his career so far.
