For nearly four decades, WrestleMania has stood as WWE’s crown jewel, a spectacle that has always been tied to North America. Since its debut in 1985, the grand stage of sports entertainment has either been hosted in the United States or, on one rare occasion, in Toronto, Canada back in 2002. But now, history is about to be rewritten. WWE has officially announced that WrestleMania 43 in April 2027 will be staged in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, making it the first-ever WrestleMania to be held outside North America.

The news was delivered in dramatic fashion during a press conference, where WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque stood alongside Saudi advisor Turki Alalshikh. Surrounded by legendary names like Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, Levesque declared this a groundbreaking moment, calling it proof that WWE is a truly global brand. He emphasized that WrestleMania 43 will be a centerpiece of Riyadh Season, a cultural and entertainment initiative that has already brought world-class sporting and music events to the Middle East.

This decision, however, has not come without controversy. While WWE executives hailed it as a chance to showcase their global reach, fan reactions online painted a different picture. On WWE’s official livestream, the live chat was filled with frustrated viewers calling the company “sell outs” and accusing them of ignoring fan bases in cities like London and Paris. Many long-time followers expressed disappointment that such an iconic event was awarded to Saudi Arabia rather than a major wrestling hotbed elsewhere.

Still, the move is not entirely surprising. WWE has cultivated a strong relationship with Saudi Arabia since signing a 10-year partnership with the Ministry of Sport back in 2018. The country has already hosted numerous premium live events, such as Crown Jewel and Super ShowDown, but never the flagship WrestleMania. To pave the way, Saudi Arabia will also host the 2026 Royal Rumble in Riyadh, setting the stage for back-to-back historic events.

It’s clear that WWE’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, is leaning heavily into international expansion. Not only has WWE deepened ties with Saudi Arabia, but its sister company UFC has also staged major events in partnership with Riyadh Season. This signals a broader strategy of bringing combat sports to global markets that have shown a growing appetite for entertainment spectacles.

WrestleMania 41 recently lit up Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, and WrestleMania 42 is expected to stay in the same city. But by WrestleMania 43, the bright lights of the WWE Universe will be shining in the desert of Riyadh. Whether fans see it as a bold step forward or a controversial sell-out, one thing is certain: history will be made when the grandest stage of them all lands in Saudi Arabia for the very first time.
