Yankees Shake Up Roster as September Arrives

As Major League Baseball hits September, the New York Yankees are making some key roster adjustments, and these changes could play a significant role in how the team finishes out the regular season. With the league allowing rosters to expand from 26 players to 28, the Yankees now have some flexibility—and they’re using it right away.

One of the biggest updates involves left-hander Ryan Yarbrough. After spending more than two months on the injured list with an oblique strain, he has officially been reinstated. Manager Aaron Boone has already made it clear that Yarbrough won’t be sliding back into the starting rotation. Instead, he’ll be used out of the bullpen. This decision is a strategic one. Yarbrough has shown his ability to handle a variety of roles—whether it’s covering multiple innings in relief or stepping in for shorter matchups against tough left-handed hitters. Boone called him “a really valuable part of our pitching staff,” and his versatility is expected to make a real difference down the stretch.

At the same time, the Yankees recalled catcher J.C. Escarra from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Escarra will provide depth behind the plate, at least until outfielder Austin Slater is ready to rejoin the club. Slater, who was acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline, landed on the injured list just days later with a hamstring issue. He’s been rehabbing in Scranton and is close to a return. When healthy, Slater brings an important weapon: he hits left-handed pitching well, something the Yankees have struggled with this season. Boone emphasized that Slater, along with fellow trade deadline pickup Amed Rosario, gives the lineup more options when facing tough southpaws.

But there’s also some uncertainty around the bullpen picture. Right-hander Paul Blackburn, who was signed late in August, has struggled badly in limited action, and his spot may be in jeopardy now that Yarbrough is back. If Blackburn is cut loose, the Yankees have several arms in Triple-A who could get the call, including Jake Bird, Yerry De los Santos, and Ian Hamilton. Each brings a different profile, though none is a guaranteed solution. Still, the Yankees are evaluating who can provide stability as the postseason race tightens.

These moves might seem small on the surface, but they’re part of a bigger puzzle. September is a critical month, and every roster spot can make an impact. With Yarbrough’s return, Escarra’s call-up, and Slater’s pending activation, the Yankees are trying to maximize depth and flexibility. The question now is whether these adjustments will be enough to keep them strong heading into October, where playoff seeding—and ultimately their championship hopes—will be decided.
