Farewell to Prunella Scales – The Voice of British Comedy
The world of British television has lost one of its brightest stars. Prunella Scales, the much-loved actress best remembered for her iconic role as Sybil Fawlty in the legendary sitcom Fawlty Towers , has passed away at the age of 93. Her family confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in London, surrounded by love, just a day after watching the show that made her a household name.
For many, Scales will forever be the commanding and sharp-witted Sybil — the hotel manager who kept her chaotic husband Basil, played by John Cleese, firmly in line. The chemistry between Scales and Cleese was pure comic magic, and together they helped make Fawlty Towers one of the greatest sitcoms ever produced. Cleese, paying tribute, described her as “a really wonderful comic actress,” adding that “scene after scene she was absolutely perfect.”

Born in 1932, Prunella Scales built a remarkable career spanning nearly seven decades, covering stage, film, television, and radio. Her versatility shone through in every role, from her early days in Marriage Lines during the 1960s to her celebrated portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution , for which she received a BAFTA nomination. But despite all her achievements, it was Sybil Fawlty — with her unmistakable laugh and unforgettable cry of “Basil!” — that cemented her legacy as one of comedy’s greatest.
In later years, Scales shared another kind of performance with the public — her real-life love story with her husband, actor Timothy West. The couple starred together in Channel 4’s Great Canal Journeys , where they explored Britain’s waterways while also opening up about Scales’s battle with vascular dementia, which she was diagnosed with in 2013. Their warmth and humor on screen touched millions, turning the series into a quietly powerful story of love, resilience, and companionship.
Her passing comes just a year after West’s death in 2024. Together, they were not only one of the great partnerships in acting but also lifelong campaigners for causes they believed in. Scales was known for her political activism, particularly her support for the Labour Party, the Anti-Nazi League, and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
Tributes have poured in from across the country. Colleagues, fans, and public figures alike have remembered her as a “national treasure” — a performer who brought laughter and intelligence to every role. BBC One is set to air a special tribute by broadcasting The Builders , one of Fawlty Towers’ most memorable episodes.
As tributes continue, one thing feels certain — Prunella Scales’s laughter, warmth, and brilliance will continue to echo through the halls of British comedy. Her “Basil!” will remain one of television’s most unforgettable sounds, a lasting reminder of a performer who turned wit and timing into pure art.
