India Stun Australia with Record-Breaking World Cup Run Chase
What a night of cricket it was in Navi Mumbai! The DY Patil Stadium witnessed history as India pulled off an unbelievable run chase to knock out six-time champions Australia and storm into the final of the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. It was a night that will be talked about for years — a night when India not only defeated the world’s top-ranked side but did it in record-breaking style.
Australia had posted a formidable 338 on the board, thanks to a stunning 119 from Phoebe Litchfield and a steady 77 from Ellyse Perry. It looked like a total well beyond India’s reach, especially in a World Cup semi-final. But what unfolded next was nothing short of sensational. Jemimah Rodrigues, the 25-year-old Mumbai native who had been dropped just three matches ago, played the innings of her life. She crafted an unbeaten 127 off 134 balls, leading India to the highest successful run chase ever recorded in women’s ODIs.

Australia had their chances — two, in fact — to send Rodrigues back early. She was dropped twice, first on 82 and again on 106, and the Aussies were made to pay dearly for those mistakes. Partnering with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who contributed a vital 89, Rodrigues put together a 167-run stand for the third wicket. Their partnership not only kept the scoreboard ticking but also kept India’s belief alive throughout the chase.
When Harmanpreet fell, the tension in the stadium was palpable. India still needed 48 runs from the last six overs — the kind of scenario where Australia had so often engineered dramatic turnarounds in the past. But this time, Rodrigues stayed calm, and the lower order — led by Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 26 from 16 balls and Amanjot Kaur’s composed 15 not out — saw the hosts home with five wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.
This victory wasn’t just about numbers or records. It symbolized India’s growth and depth over the years. From the heartbreaks of missed run chases in past tournaments to now holding their nerve in the biggest moment, the transformation was clear.
Australia, on the other hand, will return home empty-handed — out of the ODI World Cup for the first time since 2017 and no longer holding either of the ICC trophies after last year’s T20 World Cup exit. But for India, this win means a shot at history — a first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title. They’ll face South Africa in the final, and after what we just witnessed, you’d have to say: this Indian team believes anything is possible.
