Kate Garraway Finds Healing and Hope After Years of Heartbreak
Kate Garraway, the familiar and much-loved face of Good Morning Britain , has opened up about how her time on The Celebrity Traitors has unexpectedly helped her heal after what she described as “a few years of being quite sad.” Her reflections, both on the BBC series and in her recent Prima magazine interview, reveal a deeply personal story of resilience, loss, and rediscovery.
For Kate, the past few years have been marked by unimaginable pain. Her husband, Derek Draper, who was a political lobbyist, became gravely ill after contracting Covid in 2020. He battled severe complications for years, spending months in the hospital before returning home in 2021. Despite Kate’s constant care and hope, Derek suffered a heart attack in late 2023 and passed away in January 2024. In a heartfelt message at the time, Kate shared that she had been by his side in his final hours and thanked everyone for the love and support that had surrounded her family.

Now, almost two years later, Kate says being part of The Celebrity Traitors has brought a much-needed sense of joy and lightness back into her life. She admitted that joining the show – filmed in a remote castle with no phones, internet, or outside distractions – gave her the space to think, to laugh, and to reconnect with parts of herself she hadn’t felt in a long time. “I’ve learnt so much from everyone,” she said on the show. “I feel inspired, and I’ve laughed so much. After years of sadness, you’ve all made me feel like I’m finally looking out again.”
In her Prima interview, Kate described how the experience even allowed her to dream about the next chapter of her life. With her sister-in-law helping care for her children, Darcey and Billy, during filming, she found time to reflect quietly and imagine a future beyond grief. At home, the family continues to keep Derek’s presence alive through conversation and memories. Kate explained that they often talk about what Derek would have thought about things, saying, “It feels like he’s still involved in our lives, which brings comfort.”
Watching her daughter Darcey head off to university has been another emotional milestone. Kate expressed pride in how her children have handled everything, saying Darcey’s strength and independence reflect so much of what Derek had taught her.
Through her long broadcasting career – spanning more than 25 years on television and radio – Kate has always been admired for her warmth and authenticity. But now, her openness about grief and hope has shown a new depth to that strength. Even though she didn’t make it to The Traitors final, she’s won something far more meaningful: a renewed sense of life, laughter, and connection.
In her own words, Kate summed it up best – “It let me dream about the next chapter of my life.”
