Lawmakers Push for Urgent Fix of Kano–Kari Highway Amid Growing Commuter Hardships
The call for the rehabilitation of the Kano–Kari Highway has gained renewed attention as lawmakers raise concerns over the worsening state of this vital northern route. On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, members of the House of Representatives, led by Hon. Yusuf Shitu Galambi and supported by several colleagues, urged the Federal Government to take swift action to repair the highway and ease the severe hardship faced daily by commuters.
The Kano–Kari Highway stretches across three major northern states—Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi—and serves as a crucial link for trade, travel, and agricultural movement in the region. It passes through key local government areas, including Wudil, Garko, Sumaila, and Takai in Kano; Birnin Kudu and Gwaram in Jigawa; and Shira, Giade, and Misau in Bauchi State. For decades, the road has been a lifeline for farmers, traders, and transporters moving goods and livestock across northern Nigeria. However, its current state tells a different story—crumbling asphalt, dangerous potholes, and impassable sections that have made travel both risky and painfully slow.

Hon. Galambi reminded the House that back in 1999, the Federal Executive Council had already approved a major rehabilitation project for this highway, recognizing its importance to the northern economy. Yet, despite that approval and the contract award, the highway has continued to deteriorate year after year. The result has been devastating for local communities—markets that once thrived are now struggling, and the movement of farm produce has become increasingly difficult. Many rural farmers and livestock traders are counting losses as vehicles break down or products spoil before reaching their destinations.
Beyond the economic pain, the road’s poor condition has also created serious security concerns. With long stretches left isolated due to their bad shape, the route has become a target for criminal activities such as robbery and banditry. Travelers are often forced to take longer, less safe detours, further increasing costs and risks. Lawmakers stressed that this ongoing neglect not only affects livelihoods but also threatens public safety and national productivity.
In light of these challenges, the House passed a resolution urging the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritize the full rehabilitation of the Kano–Kari Highway. They also called on the Ecological Office of the Federation to address specific failed sections, especially around Sara in Jigawa State. To ensure accountability, the Committees on Legislative Compliance and Works have been directed to monitor the process closely.
This call to action highlights a pressing need that affects thousands of Nigerians every single day. The hope now is that the government will respond swiftly—transforming the Kano–Kari Highway from a symbol of neglect into a renewed artery of economic growth and safe passage for all who depend on it.
