McDavid Leads Oilers’ Explosive Comeback to Stun Red-Hot Mammoth

It was a night to remember in Edmonton as the Oilers, led by their captain Connor McDavid, stormed back into form with a statement 6-3 victory over the Utah Mammoth. The crowd at Rogers Place was electric as the Oilers exploded for five goals in the second period, completely flipping the script on one of the league’s hottest teams.

McDavid, who had been relatively quiet early in the season, reminded everyone exactly why he’s considered the best in the world. He netted two goals — including a perfectly executed finish off a slick feed from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — that left Utah’s goalie, Karel Vejmelka, with no chance. That particular play, a rapid give-and-go through heavy traffic, stood out as the defining moment of the game. It not only widened Edmonton’s lead but also reignited the team’s spark after a couple of shaky outings.

Evan Bouchard was another star of the night, picking up three assists and dictating the game from the blue line. Leon Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm both chipped in with a goal and an assist each, while Isaac Howard and Ty Emberson added to the tally to secure Edmonton’s first win after two straight losses. Stuart Skinner made 20 saves in net, holding firm when it mattered most.

For Utah, the defeat marked the end of an impressive seven-game winning streak. Logan Cooley, JJ Peterka, and Barrett Hayton found the back of the net, but their efforts weren’t enough to contain Edmonton’s offensive surge. Cooley, in particular, continued his personal hot streak — scoring his eighth of the season and extending his point run to four games. Interestingly, every one of Cooley’s goals this season has come in the first period, a rare feat in league history.

Draisaitl’s performance carried a personal milestone too. Just a day after turning 30, he celebrated his 800th career NHL game and extended his own point streak to six games. His chemistry with McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins was once again on full display, making the Oilers’ top line look unstoppable.

While the loss broke Utah’s momentum, it didn’t overshadow their historic October. The Mammoth’s eight wins this month marked the best single-month performance in franchise history — including their previous incarnations in Winnipeg and Arizona.

Up next, the Mammoth will try to bounce back at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. The Oilers, meanwhile, will look to carry this newfound energy into their next matchup against the New York Rangers on Thursday.

For Edmonton fans, this game was more than just two points — it felt like the night the Oilers finally woke up.
