Rangers Secures Crucial Win Over Kilmarnock in Rohl’s First Home League Match
Rangers delivered an important 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday, marking Danny Rohl's first home league win as the team's head coach. The match, played at Ibrox, was not without its challenges, but it was a vital step forward for a Rangers side looking to build momentum after a rocky start to the season.
The match began with Rangers taking an early lead in the 15th minute. A pinpoint cross from James Tavernier found defender Derek Cornelius, who headed the ball past Kilmarnock’s goalkeeper, Jack Beach. However, the visitors quickly responded, with George Stanger equalizing for Kilmarnock just before halftime, in the 39th minute, following a rebound from a shot by Liam Mayo.
After the break, Rangers regained control of the match, and the pressure paid off when Danilo put them back in front in the 51st minute. A well-executed header off a cross from Jovan Meghoma gave Rangers a 2-1 lead. Despite Kilmarnock's efforts to find an equalizer, Youssef Chermiti sealed the win for Rangers with a powerful strike in the 72nd minute, marking his first goal for the club and ensuring the three points stayed in Glasgow.

Speaking after the game, Danny Rohl expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially their counter-pressing tactics, which he described as "aggressive" and a sign of the style he wants to implement moving forward. "It was a good step forward," Rohl said. "Not everything was perfect, but I saw a lot of good things, and it's great when players start scoring and creating chances. This boosts their confidence and belief."
The game saw Rangers dominate possession, with 73.8% of the ball, and they recorded 13 shots to Kilmarnock’s 7. Despite Kilmarnock's limited possession, they did manage to create some opportunities, but ultimately, Rangers’ superior quality and tactical approach secured the win.
Rohl also praised the performance of his new striker, Youssef Chermiti, who showed glimpses of his potential with his match-winning goal. Rohl noted that although Chermiti has room for improvement, particularly in pressing, his special qualities were evident. “He has something special,” Rohl added, acknowledging that his focus would be on improving Chermiti step by step.
Rangers’ victory takes them up to 5th place in the Scottish Premiership table with 12 points, moving them closer to the upper echelons of the league. It was a crucial win that not only relieved some pressure on Rohl and his players but also gave them a solid foundation to build on in the coming weeks. Rangers’ next challenge will be away at Hibs on Wednesday, followed by an Old Firm semi-final against Celtic in the League Cup.
The match at Ibrox was a reminder of the challenges of the Premiership, but with Rohl at the helm, Rangers will be hoping to find consistency and push toward the top of the table as the season progresses.
