Tragedy in Doncaster: One Dead, Three Injured in Helicopter Crash
A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Doncaster on Thursday morning when a helicopter crashed into a field near Bentley, leaving one man dead and three others injured. Emergency services were called to the area off Ings Lane at around 10:15 a.m. local time, after reports of a small aircraft going down shortly after takeoff.
According to South Yorkshire Police, a 70-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Despite the best efforts of paramedics and emergency responders, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that his family has been informed and are being supported during this difficult time.
The helicopter had taken off from Retford Gamston Airport, located in Nottinghamshire, just minutes before the crash occurred. Onboard were the pilot, a 41-year-old man, along with two passengers — a 58-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy. All three survived with only minor injuries and were treated by medical teams shortly after the incident.

A police cordon was quickly established around the crash site, and residents were asked to avoid the area while investigations began. Both South Yorkshire Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have launched a joint inquiry to determine what led to the tragic accident. Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video footage of the helicopter’s final moments to come forward.
Detective Inspector Matt Bolger expressed condolences on behalf of the police, saying, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly died in this tragic incident.” He emphasized that a full investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances behind the crash.
Witnesses nearby described the moment they saw or heard the helicopter before it went down. One local worker, Curtis Borkowski, recalled hearing unusual engine noises as the aircraft flew over Doncaster. Another resident, Lee Needham, noted how close the crash site was to nearby homes, railway lines, and industrial buildings, adding that the pilot’s actions likely prevented an even greater tragedy.
Councillor Rebecca Booth, who represents Bentley on Doncaster Council, said the community has been left deeply shaken. “It’s such a lovely and close-knit area. People here really look out for each other, so this has come as a huge shock,” she shared.
Authorities confirmed that the helicopter was privately operated by a tenant based at Gamston Airport. The road near the Refood bioenergy site remains closed, and a temporary no-fly zone for drones has been enforced while investigators continue their work.
As the community grieves, tributes and messages of sympathy have begun to pour in for the victim and his family, while emergency teams continue to examine how this tragic event unfolded in what was otherwise a quiet Yorkshire morning.
