Zellers Makes a Heartwarming Comeback Across Canada

For many Canadians, the name Zellers brings back a wave of nostalgia — the red and white logo, the family-friendly atmosphere, and the unbeatable prices that defined a shopping era. And now, that beloved Canadian retailer is officially making a comeback. Yes, Zellers is returning, starting with a brand-new location opening this week at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton.

This revival marks a fresh chapter for a brand that once dominated the Canadian retail landscape. Zellers was first bought by Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) in 1978 and was built into a massive discount shopping empire with over 350 stores nationwide. For years, it was known as a go-to spot for families looking for affordable clothing, home goods, and just about everything in between. But when retail giants like Walmart and other big-box stores entered the Canadian market, competition became fierce. By 2013, most Zellers locations had been closed, marking what many thought was the end of an era.

A decade later, in 2023, HBC tried to bring the brand back with mini Zellers stores inside Hudson’s Bay locations and an online shop. However, that attempt was short-lived. Earlier this year, the brand was sold to Quebec-based retailer Les Ailes de la Mode after HBC’s collapse — and that’s when plans for a real revival began to take shape.

Now, the new Zellers is setting out with a refreshed mission — keeping the heart of the brand alive while adapting to modern shopping habits. The new store in Edmonton will be smaller than the original ones but will focus on what Zellers did best: value. As Chief Operating Officer Joey Benitah explained, “Value is the one thing that never goes out of style.”

Shoppers can expect to find men’s, women’s, and kids’ clothing, along with home goods, luggage, and seasonal essentials. However, the brand is leaving behind some of its old categories like toys and pharmaceuticals — a sign that the new Zellers is being reimagined for today’s retail world.

The Edmonton opening is just the beginning. Plans are already in motion to expand Zellers to more cities across Canada in a phased rollout. For many, this comeback is more than just a business move — it’s a sentimental return of a piece of Canadian heritage.

After all, for generations of Canadians, Zellers wasn’t just a store — it was part of growing up. And now, it’s back, ready to welcome everyone home again.
