AAP Triumphs in Tarn Taran Bypoll as Harmeet Singh Sandhu Wins Decisively

The Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll in Punjab has concluded with a clear victory for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, as their candidate, Harmeet Singh Sandhu, has been declared the winner. He secured the seat by a margin of 12,091 votes, overcoming a competitive field of 15 candidates. This by-election was closely watched as a litmus test for the popularity of the AAP government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. at the International College of Nursing in Piddi, Tarn Taran, and continued through sixteen rounds. From the early stages of counting, Harmeet Singh Sandhu maintained a steady lead over his rivals, gradually extending his margin. The runner-up, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa of the Shiromani Akali Dal, put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell short. Other prominent contenders included Mandeep Singh, an independent backed by Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), Karanbir Singh Burj from Congress, and Harjit Singh Sandhu of the BJP.

Voter turnout for the bypoll was recorded at 60.95 percent during polling on November 11, 2025. The Tarn Taran seat had become vacant following the passing of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. As the rounds of counting progressed, the AAP’s lead widened consistently, reflecting the confidence and support enjoyed by the party in the region. In fact, by the tenth round, the margin had already surpassed 7,000 votes, and by the final round, it had grown to over 12,000.

Security arrangements for the election were stringent, given Tarn Taran’s border-sensitive location. The Election Commission deployed twelve companies of Central Armed Police Forces, alongside 46 Micro Observers, to ensure a smooth and fair polling process across 222 polling stations. CCTV and webcasting facilities were installed at all polling locations, monitored under strict supervision to prevent any violations of election rules.

This victory adds to AAP’s record of success in Punjab, having won five out of six bypolls since taking office in March 2022. The decisive win in Tarn Taran not only strengthens the party’s position in the state assembly but also reinforces public support for the policies and governance of the current government. Celebrations were seen at the counting centre as Harmeet Singh Sandhu emerged victorious, marking a significant moment for AAP and confirming their continued influence in Punjab politics.

The Tarn Taran bypoll outcome demonstrates that the Aam Aadmi Party has successfully maintained its momentum in the state, and the electorate has reaffirmed its trust in the party’s leadership. This result will likely have implications for future elections in Punjab, shaping the political landscape for the months ahead.
