Adelaide Gears Up for the 93rd Annual Christmas Pageant

It’s that magical time of year again in Adelaide, when the city transforms into a festive wonderland for one of its most beloved traditions — the annual Christmas Pageant. Now in its 93rd year, this vibrant celebration is set to draw a massive crowd, with more than 300,000 people expected to line the streets to watch the parade unfold.

The excitement begins early on Saturday morning, long before the sun rises. Organisers and volunteers will start setting up from as early as 2:45 a.m. along South Terrace, where the pageant will kick off. The route winds its way from South Terrace and King William Street, moving north toward Victoria Square, then along Pulteney Street, before finishing up on North Terrace near Rundle Mall. It’s a carefully planned route designed to give as many families as possible the chance to see the spectacle up close.

This year’s event will see more than 80 beautifully decorated floats make their way from the iconic Stardust Castle to the heart of the city. Each float carries its own story — some whimsical, others nostalgic — all brought to life with thousands of hours of creativity and community effort. It’s a colourful, musical parade that symbolizes the arrival of Santa Claus and the start of the festive season in South Australia.

Pageant Director Brian Gilbertson described the event as a privilege, saying that it’s no small feat to “shut down an international city for one morning.” Yet, the smiles and joy it brings to children and families make all the planning worthwhile. Long-time organiser John Borone added that seeing the excitement on children’s faces, especially those standing along the blue honour line, is what makes the hard work worth it year after year.

With so many people expected to attend, police have also issued a gentle reminder to parents to take photos of their children before the event begins — just in case they get separated in the crowd. Road closures around the central business district will begin at midnight and remain in place until around 2 p.m. on Saturday, allowing for a smooth and safe celebration.

Beyond the logistics, though, what really makes this pageant special is the spirit of community and goodwill it brings. From performers and volunteers to the families who camp out overnight for the best viewing spots, everyone plays a part in keeping this cherished tradition alive.

As the floats roll by, the bands play, and Santa makes his grand entrance, Adelaide will once again come together in a shared moment of wonder and joy — proving that even after 93 years, the Christmas Pageant continues to capture the heart of the city like nothing else.
