Bryce Cotton Shines Despite Tough Night for Adelaide 36ers
Bryce Cotton has once again reminded everyone why he’s considered one of the NBL’s all-time greats. On Wednesday night, the Adelaide 36ers faced off against the Illawarra Hawks in what turned out to be a thrilling matchup, culminating in a 95-87 victory for the 36ers. But behind the stat sheet, there was a story of resilience and determination that fans only glimpsed at the very end.
The American superstar put on a performance for the ages, posting a double-double with 31 points and 12 assists, along with 3 rebounds and 2 steals. To add even more weight to the achievement, Cotton registered zero turnovers for the second consecutive game—a remarkable feat for any player, let alone while battling discomfort. What made the evening even more impressive was the revelation after the game that Cotton had been dealing with nausea throughout the match. Those watching closely noticed his visible distress when he was substituted late in the game, but it didn’t stop him from giving his all.

“I was dealing with a lot. I was able to channel my energy and focus on staying in the games and giving it all I got,” Cotton explained in a post-game interview with SEN SA 1629. He made it clear that, despite feeling unwell, the last thing he wanted was to leave the game and see his team lose. “That would have really bothered me,” he admitted, showing just how much he cares about the outcome for the 36ers.
36ers coach Mike Wells also addressed the situation during the post-game press conference, emphasizing that Cotton’s condition was not a major concern but still noteworthy given his performance. “He just was a little nauseated. I mean, he must have been really sick, guys. Thirty-six minutes, zero turnovers, 13 assists and 31 points, so he was really feeling sick,” Wells said. He added that Cotton insisted he was fine and kept playing, demonstrating his incredible focus and professionalism.
This win marked the 36ers’ first-ever Ignite Cup victory and improved their season record to 10-3, cementing their status as serious contenders this season. The team now turns its attention to Melbourne, where they will face the South East Melbourne Phoenix at John Cain Arena on Saturday. Fans can expect Cotton to bring the same level of determination and excellence, regardless of any obstacles he might face.
For Bryce Cotton, it’s never just about the stats or the accolades—it’s about leading his team, giving everything on the court, and showing that even when things get tough, true champions find a way to shine. This night was a perfect example of that spirit in action.
