Could Conor Geekie Be the Key Trade Target the Canadiens Need?
There’s been a growing buzz around the NHL lately, and it’s centered on one intriguing name — Conor Geekie. The young Tampa Bay Lightning center has suddenly become a hot topic, especially among Montreal Canadiens fans, as rumors swirl about whether he could be a realistic trade option for the Habs.
Now, for context, Geekie’s situation in Tampa Bay has been a bit complicated. The 21-year-old, a towering 6’4” center drafted 11th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2022, was traded to the Lightning in the summer of 2024 as part of the deal that sent defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to the Utah Mammoth. Since then, Geekie’s found himself caught in the middle of a veteran-heavy roster where breaking through has been anything but easy.

According to hockey analyst Simon “The Snake” Boisvert, Geekie’s lack of NHL playing time isn’t about performance—it’s about opportunity. On his podcast with Mathias Brunet, Boisvert explained that Tampa’s deep lineup leaves little room for a developing offensive player like Geekie. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, he’s often been stuck on the fourth line or sent down to the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. In his brief NHL stint this season, he averaged just eight to ten minutes per game and managed only one assist before being reassigned.
But once he landed in Syracuse, Geekie immediately reminded everyone why he’s considered one of Tampa’s top prospects. In just five games, he notched three goals and seven points, driving play with confidence and showcasing his powerful shot. It’s clear that at the AHL level, he’s not only ready but dominant. The question now is whether he’ll ever get the same chance in Tampa — or if another team might give him the opportunity he deserves.
That’s where the Montreal Canadiens come into the picture. The Habs have been actively seeking more depth down the middle, and Geekie’s skillset seems to check a lot of boxes. He’s big, left-handed, and capable of playing a creative, offensive style — something Montreal could use, especially on their third line. Boisvert even suggested that a package including Owen Beck and a second-round pick might be enough to get a deal done.
Both Beck and Geekie are 21, but their playing styles differ significantly. Beck is more of a defensively minded center, while Geekie leans offensive — a player who could complement guys like Kirby Dach or Zack Bolduc and even find a role on the power play.
Of course, there’s no official word yet on whether the Canadiens are seriously pursuing Geekie. But with his limited opportunities in Tampa and Montreal’s ongoing search for young, high-upside talent, the fit seems almost too perfect to ignore. For a player who’s just waiting for the right team to believe in him, a change of scenery might be exactly what unlocks his full potential.
