Dame Jilly Cooper Dies After Accidental Fall at Home
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dame Jilly Cooper, the celebrated author known for her steamy romantic novels and the Rutshire Chronicles series. An inquest has revealed that Dame Jilly, aged 88, suffered a fatal head injury after an accidental fall at her home in Bisley, Gloucestershire.
According to Gloucestershire Coroners’ Court, the fall occurred on the afternoon of 4 October, when her family found her at around 5 pm. Paramedics were called promptly and arrived at her home within 20 minutes. She was initially alert and able to speak with the crew, although she could not clearly recall how the accident had happened. Evidence suggested that she may have fallen down a flight of stairs, as a trail of blood was found in that area of her home.
Dame Jilly was transferred to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where an urgent CT scan revealed a skull fracture and a traumatic subdural haematoma. The senior coroner, Katy Skerrett, described the head injury as catastrophic and likely terminal. Despite medical care, her condition deteriorated, and she passed away the following morning at 8:30 am on 5 October, surrounded by her family. The coroner concluded the death as accidental, with no suspicious circumstances involved.
Dr. William Nattrass, Dame Jilly’s long-time GP, noted that she had experienced falls previously in 2018 and 2024 but had remained as bright, engaging, and independent as ever despite slowing mobility. Dame Jilly Cooper’s family, friends, and fans have expressed their grief at losing a literary legend whose works captured the glamour, scandals, and love lives of the wealthy horse-loving circles in the fictional Cotswolds county of Rutshire.

Her novels, including Riders and Rivals , were widely adored and earned her a devoted following. The adaptation of Rivals into a hit Disney+ series further brought her storytelling to new audiences. Tributes have poured in from across the UK, with Queen Camilla describing her as “a legend” and praising her pioneering influence on literature. Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also paid tribute, highlighting her joy and wit in bringing characters to life. Dame Jilly was honoured with a damehood in 2024 for her services to literature and charity, a recognition of the impact she had on readers and the literary world.
