David Onama Ready for His First UFC Main Event Spotlight

David Onama is living a dream he’s been chasing for years — but he’s also treating it as something that was always meant to happen. As he prepares to headline his first-ever UFC main event against Steve Garcia at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, the Ugandan featherweight can’t help but feel both thrilled and grounded at the same time.

For the first time, it’s Onama’s face on the official UFC poster — a moment that many fighters get emotional about. He’s watched others, like Jean Silva, tear up when they see their image on the wall, and while Onama admits the moment means everything to him, he’s trying to keep it in perspective. “This is everything I worked for,” he said, reflecting on his journey. “I always dreamed of being the main event, of being on the poster. Now it’s finally happening. I just want to embrace it and enjoy every second.”

It’s not just any main event either. Onama steps into this fight riding a four-fight winning streak and holding a 6–1 record in the UFC featherweight division. His rise hasn’t been easy, but it’s been steady — built on discipline, hard work, and a clear sense of belonging among the best.

Onama’s path to this moment started with raw power and finishing ability. He burst onto the MMA scene with eight consecutive stoppage wins and made a name for himself as one of the sport’s most dangerous young talents. Even after a tough short-notice debut loss to Mason Jones, he bounced back stronger, picking up statement wins against Gabriel Benitez and Garrett Armfield, and even earning respect in defeat against Nate Landwehr.

Much of his recent success, Onama says, comes from his time training at Factory X Muay Thai in Colorado, under the guidance of coach Marc Montoya. Surrounded by elite fighters like Youssef Zalal, Jonathan Martinez, and Chris Gutierrez, Onama has evolved into a more complete and composed athlete. “Training there changed my game,” he explained. “The level of skill, the mindset — everything is top-tier. I’ve learned to mix intelligence with aggression.”

Now, standing opposite him is Steve Garcia — another rising name on a hot streak of six wins. Garcia called Onama out after his last fight, something Onama took as both a challenge and a compliment. “Maybe he thought he could beat me,” Onama said with a grin. “But now he’s going to find out.”

With both fighters ranked in the featherweight Top 15, this clash isn’t just a showcase — it’s a fight that could reshape the division heading into 2026. For Onama, the goal is clear: win decisively, break into the Top 10, and continue his march toward championship contention.

“I’ve worked for this,” he said confidently. “When I beat Steve Garcia, I’ll be in the Top 10. Then it’s back to camp, back to work. No rush — my time is coming.”

UFC Fight Night: Garcia vs. Onama takes place Saturday, November 1, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
