David Szalay Wins 2025 Booker Prize for 'Flesh'
British-Hungarian author David Szalay has just been announced as the winner of the 2025 Booker Prize for his sixth novel, Flesh . The judges described the book as “extraordinary” and “a very special book,” praising its originality and the bold approach Szalay has taken to storytelling. The novel has been widely celebrated, earning acclaim from both literary critics and celebrity advocates, including Dua Lipa and Stormzy.
Flesh
The writing style of Flesh is minimalist and spare, with carefully considered white space and understated dialogue. Critics and judges alike have noted how this economy of words allows emotions and pivotal events to resonate without being explicitly described. Roddy Doyle, who chaired the judging panel, highlighted the way grief and tension are depicted even through blank pages, adding to the novel’s unique power. Booker Prize organisers described the work as “a meditation on class, power, intimacy, migration, and masculinity,” calling it a compelling portrait of one man and the experiences that shape him.

Szalay, who appeared “a bit dazed” after winning, admitted that the news would take some time to fully sink in. The award comes with a £50,000 prize, further cementing Szalay’s reputation as a major voice in contemporary fiction. He has previously been shortlisted for the Booker for his 2016 novel All That Man Is , another exploration of modern masculinity.
From his debut in 2008 with London and the South-East , through his story collections and novels like Turbulence and All That Man Is , Szalay has consistently explored themes of masculinity, migration, and the lives of working-class men who often go unnoticed in literature. Flesh
Judges spent more than five hours deliberating over the shortlist before agreeing that Flesh stood out as a singular, disciplined, and emotionally powerful work. With its daring approach and striking originality, David Szalay’s Flesh is now officially recognised as one of the most remarkable novels of 2025.
