Dick Van Dyke at Almost 100: The Secret to His Endless Energy and Optimism
At almost 100 years old, Dick Van Dyke is still going strong, keeping up with his love for singing, dancing, and acting. The legendary performer, known for his roles in Mary Poppins , Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , and The Dick Van Dyke Show , will be celebrating his 100th birthday on December 13th. But despite reaching such an extraordinary milestone, Van Dyke isn’t slowing down. In a recent interview, he shared that retirement is not on his agenda anytime soon. "I don’t want to. It’s my hobby. It’s my life," he says, highlighting his unwavering passion for acting and performance.

His dedication to staying active is no secret. Van Dyke maintains a rigorous exercise routine, working out at the gym three times a week, despite his advancing age. “I don’t know why I still want to do it, but I do,” he admits. His workout includes circuit training, jumping from machine to machine, and even dancing between sets, calling it his “secret ingredient” for maintaining his health. Music plays a huge role in this, with Van Dyke often humming and singing, sometimes belting out tunes like a Broadway star. His commitment to movement keeps him feeling young, and his wife, Arlene Silver, 54, plays a huge part in keeping his spirits up. “She keeps me young,” he says, praising her for their daily dancing and singing duets.
Van Dyke’s positive attitude has been key to his longevity. He’s always had an optimistic view on life, something he attributes to his inherent outlook. In fact, this upbeat personality is a large part of why he's been so beloved for over seven decades in the entertainment industry. He attributes his success to an outlook focused on the good side of life, explaining, "People are born with a certain personality... I tend to look on the good side of things."
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Van Dyke reflects on some regrets, such as turning down the role of James Bond and missing an opportunity to work with the legendary Cary Grant. Still, he doesn’t dwell on the past, instead focusing on what’s ahead. “I’m looking for work right now,” he jokes, even as he promotes his new book 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life , released in mid-November. The book is a reflection of his life philosophy, offering wisdom on living a fulfilling life based on optimism, humor, and compassion.
As for his legacy, Van Dyke hopes it’s not just about the many iconic roles he’s played but also the attitude he’s shared with the world. “I don’t care how long the memory of me lasts," he says. "I care about the survival of what I’ve shared with the world: humor, compassion, a zest for living, and a love of music." As long as children are singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and dancing to Chim Chim Cher-ee , he believes part of him will always be alive.
At nearly 100, Van Dyke is an inspiring testament to the power of staying active, keeping a positive attitude, and embracing life’s joys—no matter what age. His journey is far from over, and as he continues to share his music, his humor, and his optimism with the world, he reminds us all to keep dancing and singing through life.
