Dolphins Edge Out Commanders in OT After Intense Finish in Madrid
What a game this was! The Miami Dolphins pulled off a thrilling overtime victory over the Washington Commanders in Madrid, clinching a 16-13 win after a dramatic finish. The game, the first-ever NFL regular season match in Spain, was full of twists and turns, with both teams struggling to get into a rhythm but creating plenty of heart-stopping moments.
It all came down to overtime. The Dolphins had the first chance to strike, but it was Washington's Marcus Mariota who made the mistake that would cost them the game. On the very first play from scrimmage in OT, Mariota threw an interception to Miami’s Jack Jones, putting the Dolphins in prime field position. Miami didn’t waste the opportunity. A couple of solid runs by De’Von Achane set the stage for Riley Patterson, who calmly drilled a 29-yard field goal, sealing the win for the Dolphins.

Before that dramatic conclusion, both teams had their chances during regulation but couldn’t capitalize. In the fourth quarter, Mariota had a big moment when he ran for 44 yards to get Washington deep into Miami territory, down to the Dolphins' 15-yard line. But with the game on the line, the Commanders couldn't execute. On a crucial fourth-down play from the 1-yard line, Mariota’s pass to tight end Zach Ertz fell incomplete after Ertz slipped during his route. Instead of attempting a field goal to take the lead, Washington handed the ball back to Miami with less than five minutes to go.
The Dolphins didn’t make it easy on themselves either. After a muffed punt return by Washington’s Mike Sainristil gave Miami the ball at the Commanders' 42-yard line, the Dolphins were poised to strike. But they chose to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, rather than taking the easy field goal for a lead. Unfortunately for Miami, Ollie Gordon was stopped short, and the Dolphins failed to convert, keeping the game tied.
As time wound down, the Commanders had their shot. They drove downfield, and with just 15 seconds left in regulation, kicker Matt Gay had a chance to win it with a 56-yard field goal attempt. But Gay missed wide right, sending the game into overtime.
With both teams unable to score in regulation, the game was left to be decided in the extra period. After Jones’ interception, the Dolphins did what they had to do, pushing downfield to set up Patterson’s winning kick. The victory gives Miami their third win in four games, while the Commanders, now on a six-game losing streak, find themselves falling deeper into a tough season.
It wasn’t a flawless game for either team, but Miami got the job done when it mattered most, sending their fans home happy after the historic game in Madrid.
