FX Cancels ‘English Teacher’ After Two Critically Acclaimed Seasons
FX has officially decided to end the comedy series English Teacher after two seasons, leaving fans disappointed and many wondering what comes next. The show, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, first premiered in September 2024 and quickly gained attention for its sharp wit and the unique charm of its lead character, Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher navigating the chaotic world of American high schools in Austin. Alongside Alvarez, the series starred Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher, creating a dynamic ensemble cast that brought humor, heart, and a touch of absurdity to the screen.

English Teacher was praised by critics from the very beginning. Its first season earned a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season achieved a perfect 100%, reflecting the consistent quality of writing, acting, and storytelling. The first season also received nominations for major industry awards, including the Critics Choice, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and WGA Awards. Fans quickly developed a devoted following, drawn to the show’s clever mix of comedy, high school politics, and character-driven drama.
Season 2, released in September 2025, saw all ten episodes dropped at once, moving away from the weekly release format of Season 1. This season continued to follow Evan Marquez as he navigated the challenges of his personal life, the demands of his students, and the sometimes chaotic politics of the school staff. Key relationships with his best friend Gwen, gym teacher Markie, guidance counselor Rick, and the perpetually nervous Principal Grant Moretti provided both laughs and heartfelt moments, keeping the audience engaged.
Behind the scenes, the series was executive produced by Alvarez alongside Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender, and Zach Dunn, with production handled by FX Productions. Despite its critical acclaim, the series struggled to achieve large viewership numbers, which likely influenced FX’s decision not to move forward with a third season.
The show’s run was also clouded by controversy. Months before Season 1 aired, Alvarez faced sexual assault allegations from former colleague Jon Ebeling, relating to a previous web series. Alvarez denied these claims, and FX released a statement saying they reviewed the allegations before the show’s launch and noted that Ebeling had never reached out to the network directly with concerns. The network declined further comment on the matter.
While English Teacher will no longer continue on FX, its two-season run left a lasting impression on both fans and critics. The combination of Alvarez’s charm, the witty ensemble cast, and the show’s clever take on high school life ensured that it will be remembered as a standout comedy of its era, even if its time on air was cut short. For many viewers, it remains a hidden gem of the network’s recent programming slate.
