GTA 6 Delayed Again — Fans Now Face a Long Wait Until Late 2026

Rockstar Games has once again hit pause on the much-anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI , pushing its launch to November 19, 2026. Originally scheduled for May next year, the game’s delay has stirred a mix of disappointment and understanding among fans who have already waited more than a decade since GTA V ’s release in 2013.

According to Rockstar’s official statement on X (formerly Twitter), the additional months are being used to “finish the game with the level of polish players have come to expect and deserve.” It’s been a long road for GTA 6 , which has been in active development since 2018 across multiple Rockstar studios — including the main team in Edinburgh and additional support from its global offices.

The game’s story is set in the vibrant, sun-soaked streets of Vice City — Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami — and the surrounding state of Leonida. Players will follow the lives of Jason and Lucia, a romantically involved pair of criminals whose dynamic promises to bring something new to the GTA universe.

For context, GTA 6 was initially expected to arrive in late 2025, then moved to May 2026, and now it’s been pushed even further. That makes it one of the longest development cycles in gaming history — more than 12 years since the last mainline installment.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, confirmed the delay during its latest quarterly earnings call. CEO Strauss Zelnick didn’t specify an exact reason for the shift but reassured investors that Rockstar was committed to delivering “an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience.” He added that a “limited amount of additional time” was needed to ensure the game meets the studio’s exceptionally high standards.

Interestingly, this update comes amid reports of layoffs at Rockstar’s UK branch — around 30 to 40 employees — though the company insists that the firings are unrelated to the delay. Take-Two’s spokesperson called it “highly erroneous” to link the two issues, explaining that the affected employees were dismissed over breaches of company policy involving confidential information.

Fans have expressed frustration online, but many agree that if the extra time leads to a more polished and immersive game, it’s worth the wait. After all, Rockstar’s last major release, Red Dead Redemption 2 , became one of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling games of its generation.

In a way, this delay feels like déjà vu for the gaming community — but given Rockstar’s history of groundbreaking releases, anticipation for GTA 6 remains sky-high. When it finally hits shelves in November 2026, players will return to the world of fast cars, heists, and chaos — hopefully in the most ambitious Grand Theft Auto yet.
