Halifax Mourns Beloved Anthem Singer Peter Baylis

The city of Halifax is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved voices — Peter Baylis, the longtime anthem singer for the Halifax Mooseheads. Peter passed away after a courageous battle with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, which he had been diagnosed with earlier this year.

For fifteen seasons, Peter Baylis stood before thousands of fans, leading them in heartfelt renditions of “O Canada” before Mooseheads games. His performances weren’t just about singing the national anthem — they were moments that stirred pride, unity, and emotion across the arena. Fans didn’t just hear his voice; they felt it. His presence became a defining part of the Mooseheads’ game-day experience, and his energy was something people looked forward to each time the puck dropped.

The Mooseheads organization paid tribute to him with a heartfelt message, calling him a man whose dedication and passion left an enduring mark on the team and the community. “His unwavering commitment and contagious enthusiasm touched everyone in Moose Country,” the team said in a statement. Condolences poured in from fans, friends, and colleagues who remembered him not only as a performer but as a genuine, warm-hearted individual.

Before joining the Mooseheads, Peter was known for his work in Halifax’s vibrant entertainment and restaurant scene. As a member of the “Hopping Penguins” band in the 1990s, he brought joy and laughter to countless people through music and hospitality. In a past interview, he proudly said, “I can feel comfortable that I left my mark in Halifax through entertainment, through hospitality, and I’m proud of my city. I love my country, hence the singing of the anthems.”

Even after receiving his cancer diagnosis, Peter remained remarkably positive. In interviews, he spoke about embracing every moment of life and finding joy in small, everyday things. “We are guaranteed nothing on this planet,” he said, “so I’m going to choose to embrace what I have right now.”

A GoFundMe campaign had been set up earlier this year to help him cover the costs of his treatment, and the community came together, raising more than $65,000 in support. His wife, Jennifer, shared that Peter passed away peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, as they told stories, laughed, and celebrated the life he had lived. She described his passing as a performer waiting backstage for his next big moment — calm, ready, and without fear.

Peter Baylis will be remembered not only for his incredible voice but also for his spirit — one that embodied the love of music, community, and country. Halifax has lost a voice, but more importantly, it has lost a man whose joy and kindness resonated far beyond the rink.
