JaMarcus Shephard Steps In to Lead Oregon State Football’s Next Era
So, big news has just come out of Corvallis, and it has already created a wave of excitement across Beaver Nation. Oregon State University announced that JaMarcus Shephard has been named the new head football coach—the 33rd in program history. This move is being talked about as a major step forward for the Beavers, especially as they prepare to enter a brand-new era of Pac-12 competition.
What makes this announcement stand out is the energy and confidence surrounding Shephard’s arrival. Oregon State’s athletic director, Scott Barnes, emphasized how Shephard’s character and leadership style align perfectly with what the program values. It was highlighted that his presence, both personal and professional, would be something the entire Beaver community could be proud of. OSU’s president, Jayathi Murthy, echoed that feeling, noting that his passion and experience in championship-level programs will be crucial as the school sets its sights on the future.

Before landing in Corvallis, Shephard had been coaching at Alabama, where he served as assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach. During his time there, the Crimson Tide offense was consistently strong—averaging well over 30 points per game and putting together explosive passing numbers. He also helped develop standout receivers like Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams, who made immediate impacts on the field.
His coaching journey also includes important stops across the Pacific Northwest. At Washington, he played a big role in shaping one of the nation’s top passing attacks. In 2023, the Huskies’ passing game ranked second in the country, and two of their wide receivers—Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk—went on to become early NFL Draft picks. His work at Purdue and Washington State adds even more depth to his offensive background, showing a consistent pattern of high-powered passing success.
Shephard’s coaching career didn’t start on a big college stage, though. It began in Indiana high school football before he worked his way up through roles at Western Kentucky, eventually earning opportunities at major programs. Along the way, he built a reputation for developing receivers and building tough, disciplined offensive groups. His playing career at DePauw University also helped shape his approach, where he was a two-time All-American and still holds a school record in kickoff return yards.
Now, Shephard says he’s honored to lead Oregon State and ready to build a culture grounded in toughness, integrity, and relentless effort. He’ll be formally introduced on December 2, but the anticipation has already started. With the new Pac-12 era on the horizon and a coach known for explosive offenses stepping in, expectations for the Beavers are quickly rising.
