Jenna Bush Hager Shares Daughter's Dark Reaction to 'Cinderella'
You know, Jenna Bush Hager recently shared a hilarious and slightly dark story about her daughter’s reaction to watching Cinderella as a child, and it’s one of those moments that makes you laugh and go, “Oh, kids say the darndest things!” On the latest episode of TODAY With Jenna & Friends , Jenna, who’s now 43, recalled how her daughter Mila completely misunderstood the story. Instead of the usual “fairytale magic” reaction, Mila apparently assumed something much grimmer. According to Jenna, after watching the movie, Mila actually went up to one of Jenna’s colleagues, Donna, and asked, “When my mom dies, will you be my stepmother?” Can you imagine? Jenna herself couldn’t help but laugh at the dark innocence in that moment.

Andy Cohen, who was guest co-hosting that day, added his own comedic twist, joking about how Cinderella is really “52 minutes of cat and mouse play” and not nearly enough glam or drama with the stepsisters. Jenna chimed in, reflecting on how her kids would sometimes watch these fairytales so much that they genuinely seemed to believe she was going to disappear one day. Her kids, Mila, 12, Poppy, 10, and Hal, 7, with her husband Henry Hager, clearly have a vivid imagination—and sometimes a rather dark sense of humor.
The episode didn’t just stick to movie reactions. Jenna also opened up about a little “mouse problem” at home, explaining how their cats love to play with the mice but don’t actually solve the problem. Andy immediately suggested calling an exterminator, giving viewers a glimpse into the day-to-day realities of her family life—complete with unexpected chaos and humor.
And speaking of Hal, her youngest, Jenna shared how he sometimes intervenes when she and Henry show affection. The little guy apparently punches his dad in moments of jealousy, earning the nickname of a “protective” child. But Jenna also mentioned that he’s very polite and sweet, often complimenting her with a simple “You look pretty, mommy.” Meanwhile, his sisters apparently enjoy teasing him just enough to keep him on his toes.
Finally, Jenna revealed she had once hoped for a fourth child, joking about how she “would have had 22 children…not really, just rounding out the three she has now.” It’s these candid, funny, and real moments that make Jenna so relatable to her audience. Between Mila’s unexpectedly dark take on Cinderella , Hal’s protective antics, and the family’s mouse dilemma, it’s clear life in the Hager household is never boring—and Jenna shares it all with warmth, humor, and authenticity.
