Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is once again using his platform for more than laughs — this time to tackle food insecurity head-on during one of the toughest times in recent memory. Amid the ongoing U.S. government shutdown and the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Kimmel has launched what he calls a “big, beautiful” food bank in Los Angeles to help families struggling to put meals on the table.

The initiative, called the Jimmy Kimmel Live Big, Beautiful Food Bank , opened right behind his Hollywood studio and is accepting donations of food and essential supplies. The effort comes as millions of Americans face uncertainty following the government’s halt on SNAP payments, which many low-income households rely on for groceries.

Kimmel announced the project on his show and social media, explaining that the idea was born out of frustration and compassion. He said cutting off benefits during a shutdown “creates uncertainty for American children, seniors, and families,” urging viewers in Los Angeles to drop off donations and encouraging everyone else to support their local food banks. Items like nonperishable foods, juice boxes, cereal, diapers, wipes, hygiene products, and feminine care supplies are all being collected for local organizations including the Los Angeles Food Bank and St. Joseph Center .

Of course, Kimmel couldn’t resist adding a bit of his signature satire. The name of the food drive — “Big, Beautiful Food Bank” — is a cheeky nod to former President Donald Trump’s phrasing and past legislative slogans. During his recent monologue, Kimmel also took aim at Trump for throwing what he called “the most ill-timed, tone-deaf Halloween party imaginable” at Mar-a-Lago, complete with a “Great Gatsby” theme. He pointed out the irony of celebrating extravagance while millions of Americans faced losing their food assistance. “It felt like the last big bash before the Epstein files come out,” he joked.

This isn’t the first time Kimmel has clashed with the administration. Just months ago, his show faced temporary suspension after he criticized officials over their handling of political violence — a move that led to widespread public backlash and support for his reinstatement. Since then, his popularity has only grown, with many praising his willingness to speak up and act when others stay silent.

Now, instead of just calling out injustice, Kimmel is physically helping to fill the gap left by government gridlock. His Hollywood lot has become a hub of generosity, where ordinary people are stepping in to do what leaders haven’t — making sure no one in their community goes hungry.

In a time when politics have divided so many, Jimmy Kimmel’s latest act proves that empathy, humor, and action can still go hand in hand — and that sometimes, a “big, beautiful” idea can make a very real difference.
