Kmart Recalls Kinetic Sand Amid Asbestos Fears
A major recall has been issued by Kmart for its Kinetic Sand products after traces of asbestos were detected, prompting concern among parents and schools across Australia. The recall, which was announced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), affects several coloured sand products that are commonly used in sensory play and arts and crafts for children. The decision has led to temporary school closures and a nationwide alert to ensure the safety of students and families.
In response to the recall, 17 public schools, including 16 in Canberra and one in Brisbane, were closed on Friday as a precautionary measure. The closures were necessary to allow testing and remediation of any potential asbestos contamination. According to officials, the risk of asbestos exposure from the coloured sand is considered extremely low. Professor Martyn Kirk from the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University explained that it is unlikely the asbestos particles would become airborne and pose a health risk, especially given the short-term exposure typically involved with these products.

Air testing has already been conducted at eight of the affected schools, and results so far have returned negative for asbestos traces. Experts have reassured parents that there is no significant cause for concern. Professor Kirk emphasized that while caution is important, the likelihood of harmful exposure in a school setting is very low, and parents should feel reassured about their children’s safety.
Despite the initial alarm, the reopening of schools has begun. Florey Primary School in Canberra’s northwest was the first to resume classes, with the reopening fast-tracked to coincide with the school’s annual fair. Parents and organisers expressed relief and gratitude that the event could proceed safely, noting that the temporary closure had caused understandable stress and uncertainty. On reopening day, the schoolyard was once again lively, filled with stalls, music, costumes, and hundreds of families enjoying the fair.
The recall has highlighted the importance of rigorous safety checks for children’s products, especially those used in educational and play settings. Kmart has urged customers to return any affected Kinetic Sand products to stores immediately, and the ACCC continues to monitor the situation to ensure that all recalled items are safely removed from circulation.
While the incident caused temporary disruption, the coordinated response by schools, authorities, and parents demonstrates the priority given to child safety. With the majority of air tests returning negative results and schools reopening, it appears that the situation is under control, and children can return to their classrooms and play activities with minimal risk.
