Letterman Stands Up for Seth Meyers After Trump’s Latest Attack
So here’s what’s been going on lately: Seth Meyers has once again found himself in the middle of a political storm, and this time, David Letterman stepped in with some classic Letterman-style support. The whole thing started when former President Donald Trump publicly demanded that NBC fire Meyers — something he has done before, but this round stirred up even more attention.
In a video Letterman posted on Nov. 25, he gave what can only be described as a warm, sarcastic shoutout to “our friend Seth Meyers.” He pointed out, almost with amusement, that the sitting president was calling for Meyers’ job. Letterman said his first reaction was something like, “This is just delightful. How do you think that’s going to go?” It was delivered with that dry, amused tone he’s known for, and he added that he had “never been more proud of Seth Meyers.”
Letterman reminded viewers that “Late Night” used to be his old show before he moved to CBS. He said Meyers “does a magical job,” but also tossed in a joking warning: “Just remember, Seth — things happen.” It was classic Letterman, mixing support with that offbeat sense of humor.

Trump’s criticism wasn’t exactly subtle. In a Truth Social post, he accused Meyers of having “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said he had “no talent,” and insisted NBC should fire him “IMMEDIATELY!” What made things even more eyebrow-raising was that Brendan Carr, the chairman of the FCC, shared Trump’s post — something that raised concerns, especially since Carr had been criticized earlier for appearing to pressure ABC over Jimmy Kimmel’s comments.
But Meyer’s reaction? Pure calm. On his show, he brushed it off with a comparison that many people understood instantly. He said he handles these presidential attacks like you’d handle an angry driver honking and flipping you off on the highway — you just ignore them and move on. He even noted that being on Trump’s “list” wasn’t exactly special, considering how long that list has become.
Letterman didn’t stop at supporting Meyers. He went on to criticize Trump more broadly, calling the administration “a wonder of idiocy” and referring to Trump as “our dictator,” emphasizing that the behavior he’s seeing is worse than anything he has watched unfold in public life. Letterman has been openly critical of Trump for years, and this episode was no exception.
All of this comes after a stretch where Trump has targeted multiple late-night hosts — from Colbert to Kimmel — with Letterman repeatedly pushing back on what he sees as authoritarian behavior. And despite Trump firing shots back at Letterman, even calling him “overrated” and a “LOSER,” Letterman keeps showing up with humor, perspective, and loyalty to the comedians who came after him.
In the end, this whole exchange became a reminder of how heated the relationship between politics and late-night comedy has become — and how, sometimes, the best response is simply to laugh and keep going.
