Mavericks Hold Off Trail Blazers in Overtime Thriller

The Dallas Mavericks finally broke their losing streak on Sunday night, holding off the Portland Trail Blazers in a thrilling overtime victory, 138-133. It had been a long road for the Mavericks, who had just ended a four-game home stretch without a win—until this game. The matchup was a test of resilience, especially with the Mavs missing star player Anthony Davis due to a calf strain, and Portland missing key players like Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson.

Portland came out strong, despite their absences. Shaedon Sharpe led the way for the Trail Blazers with 36 points, and Deni Avdija contributed 29. The Blazers had a solid offensive presence, with both players taking control and leading their team. However, despite Portland’s efforts, the Mavericks struggled early on, lacking a clear offensive plan. D'Angelo Russell and Brandon Williams, both filling in as point guards, couldn’t get things flowing for the Mavs for most of the game.

A bright spot for the Mavericks, however, came off the bench in the form of Klay Thompson. After a tough start to the season, Thompson had his most productive game in a while, scoring 19 points, including five three-pointers. But it was Cooper Flagg who ultimately helped swing the momentum in Dallas’ favor. After only three shot attempts in the first half, Flagg came alive in the second half, making key shots and being more aggressive. A turning point came when the Mavericks found themselves down by six points heading into the final quarter. Thanks to a 7-0 run midway through the fourth, they were able to tie the game and force overtime.

Overtime was where the Mavericks truly took control. They were flawless, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, with no turnovers except for a minor 8-second violation. A couple of clutch shots from P.J. Washington and Max Christie, alongside some solid defense from the Mavericks’ center rotation, sealed the game. The dynamic trio of Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and Moussa Cisse dominated the boards and blocked six shots, with Gafford’s two crucial blocks helping to stop any Portland push in the extra period.

In overtime, with 1:39 remaining, Deni Avdija fouled out, which shifted the momentum to the Mavericks. Gafford hit two key free throws, and Flagg found Washington for a dunk that put Dallas ahead for good. The game ended with the Mavericks securing a much-needed win. Cooper Flagg and P.J. Washington led Dallas with 21 points each, while Daniel Gafford finished with 20.

It was a hard-fought game, and the Mavericks should be proud of the way they fought back. But despite the victory, there were still some concerns. Many are wondering if Cooper Flagg is being “frozen out” of the offense. In the first half, he was barely involved, which seemed odd given his talents. A more consistent offensive plan for him could make all the difference going forward. On the other hand, Klay Thompson might have found his stride coming off the bench, providing a spark that the Mavericks desperately needed.

While the win was a relief, it highlighted the Mavericks’ need for better execution on offense and a more cohesive game plan moving forward. But for now, they can celebrate a much-needed victory, their first in a while, as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
