Modi's Alliance Set for Big Win in Bihar Assembly Elections

The latest Bihar assembly election results are beginning to paint a clear picture, and it looks like Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alliance is on course for a decisive victory. Early counting started at 8:00 AM local time, and although only initial results have trickled in, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is leading in nearly 200 out of 243 seats. While some shifts are always possible as counting progresses, it seems increasingly unlikely that the opposition, currently ahead in fewer than 40 constituencies, will manage to close the gap.

The elections, conducted on the 6th and 11th of November, saw a record voter turnout of 66.91%, the highest in Bihar since the state’s first elections in 1951. The polls came after a controversial revision of electoral rolls, which the opposition claimed could exclude legitimate voters and favor the BJP. Both the ruling party and the Election Commission have denied these allegations.

The current alliance, which pairs the BJP with the Janata Dal (United), has governed the state with JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar serving as the outgoing chief minister. Their main competition was a coalition of the Congress party, the regional Rashtriya Janata Dal, and several smaller parties. Early trends indicate that the BJP-JD(U) partnership has successfully maintained its hold, while a new entrant, the Jan Suraaj party led by former political strategist Prashant Kishor, has failed to gain any significant traction.

Analysts are pointing to several factors behind this apparent sweep. Female voters, who make up nearly half of Bihar’s electorate, recorded their highest turnout ever at 71.6%. Many credit the appeal of welfare schemes and financial assistance programs, which appeared to resonate particularly with women. This demographic support seems to have played a crucial role in cementing the BJP-JD(U) advantage.

The elections were also closely watched as they might mark the final active participation of two regional political stalwarts, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav, both of whom have dominated Bihar politics for nearly four decades. Health concerns and advancing age have kept both leaders from campaigning as actively as before. Their absence from the frontline, paired with the strong organizational efforts of the BJP, appears to have contributed to the scale of the victory.

Bihar, India’s youngest state with a median age of just 22, holds more than 74 million registered voters. The state faces significant economic challenges, and millions of its citizens migrate to other parts of India for work. Despite being one of the few states where Modi's party has not previously been able to form a government independently, early results suggest that the BJP-led alliance is well on its way to establishing a dominant position here, which could have wider implications for upcoming state elections in India.

As celebrations are reported in Patna and other parts of the state, the opposition has yet to respond to the trends. Observers will be keeping a close eye on the final results, but for now, the message from Bihar appears clear: Modi's alliance is steering toward a decisive win.
