Olivier’s Two Goals Lead Blue Jackets Past Oilers in Thrilling 5-4 Win
What a night it was at Nationwide Arena in Columbus! The Blue Jackets hosted the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, and it turned into an electrifying matchup full of twists, big plays, and clutch goals. Mathieu Olivier was the star of the show, scoring twice and adding an assist, while Charlie Coyle also racked up three points with a goal and two assists. Columbus extended their home winning streak to three games, defeating Edmonton 5-4 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.
Olivier set the tone early, opening the scoring at 15:36 of the first period with a tip of Coyle’s shot past Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard. Just 44 seconds into the second period, he forced a turnover and fed Coyle at the crease for a quick 2-0 lead. But the Oilers weren’t going to roll over. Leon Draisaitl and Matt Savoie responded quickly, scoring 1:40 apart to pull Edmonton even at 2-2. Columbus answered almost immediately, though, as Denton Mateychuk buried a rebound to restore the lead just 30 seconds later. Adam Fantilli added a late second-period goal, extending his point streak to 10 games, and Columbus went into the third with a 4-2 advantage.

The third period brought more drama. Olivier struck again at 7:30, giving Columbus a three-goal cushion, but the Oilers responded instantly as Vasily Podkolzin scored, keeping the game alive. Draisaitl’s second goal later in the period made it 5-4 and set up a tense finish, with Edmonton buzzing around the net trying to even the score. But the Blue Jackets’ defense held strong, and Jet Greaves made 25 crucial saves to secure the victory.
This game also marked Columbus’s first outing without captain Boone Jenner, who is sidelined with an upper-body injury. Despite his absence, the team managed to control the play, as Olivier noted, highlighting the challenge of shutting down some of the league’s best players while finding a way to come out on top. Meanwhile, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid assisted twice, extending his point streak to seven games, and Evan Bouchard had three assists, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Columbus’s offensive push.
The win keeps Columbus hot at home, and they’ve now beaten Edmonton five straight times at Nationwide Arena, dating back to 2019. The Blue Jackets will host the New York Rangers on Saturday, while the Oilers head to Carolina, hoping to bounce back from a tough loss. It was a thrilling, back-and-forth game that showed just how exciting hockey can be when two high-powered teams go head-to-head.
Columbus’s resilience and Olivier’s heroics made this one a night to remember for the home crowd, proving once again that when the Blue Jackets are in form, they are a team to be reckoned with.
